CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina dropped the second game of the Southern Conference doubleheader with Samford 64-47 Saturday in the Ramsey Center. 
 
Turning Point:
Western Carolina led for the majority of the first half until Samford took a 28-27 lead with 17 seconds left in the second quarter. The Bulldogs took their one-point lead and outscored the Catamounts 22-10 in the third quarter to pull away.
 
 Individual Leaders
  • Redshirt senior Tembre Moates was 7-of-9 from the field to lead the Catamounts with 16 points. 
  • Sophomore Andrea Martin Ruiz was the second Catamount to score in double figures with 13. 
  • Nadia Marshall and Zanoria Cruz each ripped down seven rebounds for WCU. 
  • Samford's Andrea Cournoyer led all scorers with 20 points. 
 
 Inside the Box Score
  • After outscoring Samford 19 to 14 in the first quarter, Samford outscored WCU in the final three quarters. 
  • There were two ties and three lead changes in the game. 
  • Samford outrebounded Western Carolina 40 to 32 but the key note is the Bulldogs 30 defensive boards. 
  • Western Carolina had 17 turnovers which turned into 18 Bulldog points. 
  • Samford doubled up WCU behind the three-point line hitting eight to the Catamounts four. 
  • After shooting below 35 percent from the field in the first half, Samford shot a sizzling 50 percent in the third and fourth. 
  • Samford went to the free-throw line 20 hitting 14 while WCU was 5-of-6.
  News & Notes
  • After missing a three-pointer for the first time in 40 games in the contest against Samford on Thursday, Lauren LaPlant was back to her long-range shooting ways hitting two treys Saturday. 
  • The Catamounts extended its three-point streak as a team – WCU has hit at least one three-pointer in 345 straight games dating back to 2009. 
  • Western Carolina has scored under 50 points in the last three games. 
  • Moates has scored in double figures in back-to-back games, 12 on Thursday and 14 on Saturday, for the first time this season. 
  • Martin Ruiz's 13 points is a season-high. She also played a season-high 37 minutes. 
  • Cruz's seven rebounds was a career-high for the rookie.

Western Carolina will host Wofford in back-to-back games next week facing the Terriers at 6 p.m. Thursday and 2 p.m. Saturday in the Ramsey Center.
