Catamounts Open Season with 7-0 Win over Lenoir-Rhyne

Jacy Smith earns 20th singles win in her career

CULLOWHEE, N.C. –  Western Carolina women's tennis opened the 2021 season with a 7-0 home opening win over visiting Lenoir-Rhyne.

TURNING POINT:
Western Carolina won the doubles point after a comeback by Jacy Smith and Julia Pezzoco at No. 1 doubles when the doubles point was tied 1-1. The duo was down 3-4 and battled back to win 6-4. The Catamounts used the doubles point victory as a springboard to a shutout of Lenoir-Rhyne.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Freshman Anotella Benavides got the singles off to the right start winning at No. 5 singles 6-0, 6-4.
  • Western Carolina only lost one set - Anna Ujanov dropped set two but battled back to win 10-8 after taking set one 6-4.
  • Freshman Kata Foldeak played at No. 1 singles winning 6-3, 7-6.
 
NOTES:
  • Western Carolina won its opening match of the season for the first time since 2015 when the Catamounts defeated North Carolina A&T 7-0 on Jan. 30.
  • Junior Jacy Smith earned her 20th career win in singles play. She becomes the 16th women's tennis player in program history to have 20 or more wins in a career.

Western Carolina will take a small break and be back in action Feb. 9 at Clemson.
