Catamounts Open Season 2-0 For First Time Since 1995

Take 6-1 win over Lenoir-Rhyne

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina women's tennis played its second-consecutive match against Lenoir-Rhyne defeating the Bears 6-1 Friday at the Catamount Athletic Complex.

TURNING POINT:
Western Carolina swept the doubles point taking all three matches against Lenoir-Rhyne going up 1-0. The Catamounts went on to win the first five singles matches to secure the match.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Senior Carli Deehr picked up the first win for the Catamounts in singles play winning 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 singles.
  • Junior Jacy Smith dropped her match at No. 2 singles in a tense hard-fought contest falling 7-6 (6), 7-5.
  • Freshman Kata Foldeak and Smith were paired at No. 1 doubles winning 6-1.  
 
NOTES:
  • Western Carolina's 2-0 start to the season is a first for the Catamounts since 1995 when the team defeated Charleston Southern, Southern Carolina state and UNC Asheville to begin the season 3-0.
  • Junior Hoda Habib moved up to No. 3 singles after playing at No. 4 singles in the Jan. 24 win over Lenoir-Rhyne.  
 
UPCOMING:
Western Carolina will take a small break and be back in action Feb. 9 at Clemson.
