Pursey Scores Pair of Goals to Lead Catamounts to 3-1 Road Win at Furman

First win at Furman since 2009

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Valentine Pursey scored two goals, both in the second half, as Western Carolina shocked Furman 3-1 Friday evening to earn its first Southern Conference road win of the season. 
 
Individual Leaders:
  • Pursey scored two goals in the match, both in the second half. 
  • Senior Ashlee Owens got the nod in goal allowing one goal and notching three saves. She improves to 2-2 on the season.
  • Freshman Abbie Lainhart scored the Catamounts' third goal of the match – her second of the season.
  • Maryanne Kilgore and Naya Marcil each had assists in the match. 
 
 Inside the Box Score
  • After a scoreless first half, the two teams scored three goals in three minutes to open the final 45 minutes of the match.
  • Pursey broke open the match off a Catamount corner kick. Reily Nelson took the corner kick sending the ball to the 18-yard line. The ball was deflected and fell right in front of Pursey who sent it into the goal in the 56th minute. 
  • Furman knotted the match just over a minute later, at 57:25 thanks to a goal by the Paladins' Isabella Gutierrez.
  • Thanks to Pursey, the Catamounts retook the lead only 23 seconds later, 57:48 taking a pass from rookie Kirsten Hahn at the 18-yard line and dribbled to the eight taking the shot and garnering her second goal of the match. 
  • Lainhart helped the Catamounts pull ahead by two goals when at the 77th minute when Furman failed to clear the ball and senior Maryanne Kilgore maneuvered for the ball passing it to Lainhart who headed the ball in at the 12. 
  • There were a combined 27 shots in the match, 16 by Furman and 11 by the Catamounts. 
  • Western Carolina had a chance early in the first half to get on the scoreboard when the Catamounts were awarded a penalty kick at 19:31. Pursey attempted the PK but it was saved by Paladin goalkeeper Nora Sampson. 
 
News & Notes:
  • Western Carolina's win at Furman was the first victory in Greenville, S.C. since a 2-0 win on Oct. 23, 2009. The victory also snapped a three-match losing streak to Furman and marks the fourth time the Catamounts have won at the Paladins home stadium. 
  • Pursey's five goals on the season are the most, in one season, by a Catamount since former Catamount Megan McCallister had 10 goals in the 2017 season. For her career, which includes her four years at IUPUI, she has scored 32 goals in her collegiate career. 
  • Owens started her first conference match of the season and also earned her first conference victory in goal. 
  • WCU has now won four consecutive road matches. 
  • Hahn dished her team-leading third assist on the year. 
  • Furman opens the season 0-2 in conference play for the first time since 2018 when the Paladins fell to ETSU (1-0) and Western Carolina (3-1) to open SoCon play. 
  • Western Carolina has won four of its last five matches.

  • Western Carolina travels to Wofford Sunday for a 1 p.m. kick-off. The match can be seen on ESPN+.
