SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Valentine Pursey scored the golden goal in overtime to help lift Western Carolina women's soccer to a 2-1 victory at Wofford Sunday at Snyder Field.

Individual Leaders:
  • Pursey scored the golden goal ending the match with four shots and two on goal.
  • Freshman Naya Marcil scored the first goal of the match for the Catamounts.
  • Junior goalkeeper Melody Mezzina returned in goal after missing the match at Furman. She played 92:09 minutes yielding one goal and notching three saves. She improves to 6-2-1 on the year.

 Inside the Box Score
  • Just like the match at Furman on Friday, Western Carolina wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. In the 10th minute, Wofford was handed down a yellow card and the Catamounts were awarded a free-kick just inches outside the 18. Marcil curled it into the top right of the goal.
  • At the 27th minute, Wofford tied the match setting up the overtime after a scoreless second half.
  • In the 92nd minute, Pursey scored the golden goal to secure the win. Maggie Lloyd sent the ball in the box and it pinged off a Wofford player who tried to send it back to a Terrier, but the ball came right in front of Pursey who sent a liner into the bottom left of the goal.
  • Western Carolina had a total of 15 shots, seven on goal in the match. The Catamount defense held Wofford to only four shots in the contest, four on goal, with Mezzina earning three saves in those four shots on goal.

 News & Notes:
  • Pursey has scored three goals in the last two matches and five of her six goals on the year have been game-winners. Two of her goals against Furman and Wofford were game-winning.
  • Western Carolina has now won the last seven meetings with Wofford and is 16-7-3 overall against the Terriers.
  • The Catamounts have won their last five road matches and enjoying a three-match winning streak. WCU's five road wins are the most for a Catamount team since 2016 when the club had six road victories in that season.
  • In her nine matches played, in 802:35 minutes in goal, Mezzina has allowed five goals with a 0.56 goals-against average. She has recorded 30 shutouts during the year.
