Sarah Janourova both logged double-doubles, but Western Carolina dropped its home opener to Mercer 3-1 Friday night on Ingles Court at the Ramsey Center. The Bears won by scores of 23-25, 25-16, 26-24, 25-16.
Gebel recorded a match-best 18 kills and 13 digs for her seventh double-double of the season. With her 13 digs, Gebel surpasses the 1,000 career digs milestone and is the 12
th player in school history to have 1,000 career kills and 1,000 career digs. Janourova tallied 20 assists to go along with 17 digs for her fifth double-double of the season. Senior
Sydney Carlson also finished with 20 assists. Reigning Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week
Destinee Dorsey had a match-best 24 digs.
Annie Karle led a balanced Mercer attack with 14 kills followed by Taylor Lynch with 12 and Rayanne de Oliveira with 11. Brittany Major tallied nine kills and 12 digs. Megan Smith paced Mercer with 23 digs.
The opening set featured six lead changes and 11 ties. Tied at 15, the Catamounts used an 8-1 run for a 23-16 advantage after a Gebel kill. Mercer didn't go quietly, pulling to within a point, 24-23, on a Karle kill. Following a WCU timeout, Gebel clinched the set for the Catamounts with a kill.
Tied at nine in the second set, Mercer tallied three straight points for a 12-9 lead and would lead the rest of the way to tie the match.
WCU led the third set 24-22 following a Mercer serving error but couldn't hold off the Bears as a Lexi Uhrhan ace closed out the set and gave the visitors a 2-1 lead in the match.
Following a
MaKenzie White kill that brought WCU within two, 17-15, in the fourth set, Mercer tallied the next two points and held on down the stretch to clinch the match.
The Catamounts remain at home on Saturday, welcoming Samford for a 6 p.m. contest.
