Catamounts Drop Heartbreaker to Samford 2-1

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Samford women's soccer escaped with a 2-1 victory over Western Carolina women's soccer after the Catamounts put up a spirited fight against the Southern Conference-leading Bulldogs Friday at the Catamount Athletic Complex.
 
Individual Leaders:
  • Graduate Natalie McNally scored the first goal of the match giving Western Carolina the early lead. 
  • Rookie Naya Marcil picked up the assist on McNally's goal. 
  • Valentine Pursey four of the Catamounts five shots in the contest. 
  • Mary Raymond and Alyssa Frazier each scored goals for the Bulldogs.
 
 Inside the Box Score
  • Western Carolina and Samford played to a scoreless tie in the first 45 minutes of the match. 
  • The Catamounts took the early 1-0 lead scoring in the 49th minute. McNally took a pass from Marcil, inside the box, as the ball sailed into the hands of Samford goalkeeper Morgan McAsian. It looked like a save until the referee held up the stop the clock sign signaling a goal. McAsian made the save attempt behind the goal line. 
  • Almost 20 minutes later Raymond's goal tied the match for Samford, 1-1.
  • The Bulldogs were awarded an indirect free-kick to the right side of the goal at the 18-yard line. Frazier hooked the ball to the right and into the back of the net at 74:24 to take the lead, 2-1.
  • Western Carolina had a huge opportunity to tie the match in the 77th minute when the Catamounts were awarded a direct kick after a Bulldog foul. Pursey squared up and sent the ball over the Samford wall but the ball took a turn to the left and McAsian picked up the save. 
  • Samford had 16 shots in the match, eight in each half.
  • The Catamounts had five total shots, four in the second 45 minutes. 
  • Samford had eight corner kicks while Western Carolina had four. 
  • Senior Ashlee Owens got the call to start the match in goal just minutes before the match as Melody Mezzina was unable to go. She had four saves in the contest and falls to 2-3 on the season. 
 
News & Notes:
  • With the loss to Samford Western Carolina is suffering through a two-match losing streak. 
  • With the goal in the match, the Catamounts have scored 18 goals on the season. 
  • McNally scored her second goal of the season and including her goals at IUPUI she has scored five goals in her collegiate career. Her two goals with Western Carolina match's her career-high as she also scored two goals in the 2019 season with the Jaguars.
