CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Valentine Pursey scored a pair of goals helping propel Western Carolina women's soccer to a key 3-0 shutout against visiting Chattanooga, in Southern Conference play, Sunday at the Catamount Athletic Complex.

The win moves the Catamounts into a tie for second place in the SoCon standings with Furman. If the season ended today WCU would control second place head-to-head against the Paladins since Western Carolina defeated Furman earlier in the season.

Individual Leaders:
  • Pursey scored a pair of goals in the contest, one in each half.
  • Freshman Naya Marcil dished out a pair of assists.
  • Rookie Kirsten Hahn scored the second Catamount goal in the first half.
  • Senior goalkeeper Ashlee Owens started her second-straight match earning a shutout. She had four saves and improves to 3-3 on the season.
  • Chattanooga's Samantha Shaw had three shots for the Mocs.
 Inside the Box Score
  • Pursey wasted no time giving the Catamounts the early lead scoring five minutes into the contest. Marcil crossed the ball in front of the net to Pursey who unleashed a shot off her right foot sailing into the left upper corner of the net.
  • Late in the first half, at the 34th minute, Lainhart passed the ball to Hahn at about the 20-yard line. Hahn shook off the Mocs' defender and connected with the ball scoring a bottom-shelf goal on the right side.
  • The Catamounts put the match away in the 54th minute with Pursey's second goal of the contest. Marcil took the WCU corner kick sending it inside the box and off the head of Pursey who sent it into the goal.
  • Western Carolina had a total of 16 shots in the match, 10 in the first half. Chattanooga managed seven shots, three in the first half and four in the second.
  • Mocs' goalkeeper Abbey Saddler had five saves in the match.

News & Notes:
  • With the two goals against Chattanooga, Pursey has scored eight on the season. It is the most goals scored by a Catamount since 2017 when Megan McCallister netted 10 goals.
  • Including her goals scored at IUPUI, Pursey has scored 35 goals in her collegiate career.
  • Six of Pursey's eight goals on the year have been game-winners.
  • Owens picked up her first shutout in, a full 90-minute match, for the first time in her career. The three wins on the season are also the most for the Harrisburg, N.C. native.
  • Hahn scored her third goal on the season and her first goal since Aug. 29 against Gardner-Webb.
  • Marcil had three assists over the last three matches, one against Samford and a pair against Chattanooga. She leads the Catamounts with four assists on the year.
  • The win over Chattanooga halted a five-match losing streak to the Mocs. The three goals the Catamounts scored against Chattanooga are the most by WCU over the Mocs since the four scored by WCU in 2014.
  • Western Carolina's 3-0 win over Chattanooga is the team's seventh shutout of the season.
  • Chattanooga has now been shut out 10 times this season and WCU's shutout of the Mocs is the fourth time they have been shutout in conference play.
  • Western Carolina's nine wins on the season are the most since WCU had 11 victories in 2019.
  • Head Coach Chad Miller now has 96 wins at the helm of the Catamount women's soccer program. He is the winningest coach in WCU women's soccer history. For his career, Miller has 190 victories all-time as a head coach.
