Soccer Escapes VMI with 1-0 Win

Faces UNCG Sunday in final match of the regular season

LEXINGTON, VA. – Western Carolina women's soccer escaped with a 1-0 victory at VMI Friday afternoon at Patchin Field. 
 
The win keeps the Catamounts in the hunt for the No. 2 seed in the upcoming 2021 Southern Conference Championships next weekend. 
 
 Individual Leaders:
  • Western Carolina's Maggie Lloyd and Valentine Pursey both finished with five shots apiece in the match. 
  • Senior goalkeeper Ashlee Owens earned the shutout in goal picking up two saves. She improves to 4-3 on the year. 
  • Keydet goalie Jillian Hall had a monster match with her third most saves of the season with 11. 
 
 Inside the Box Score
  • The lone score of the match was an own goal. At 40:13, a shot by Western Carolina's Payton Creed deflected off the left post bouncing off Keydet goalie Hall and into the net. 
  • Western Carolina had 30 shots in the contest, 12 of which were on goal. VMI was held to six shots, two on goal. 
  • VMI committed a foul in the 27th minute setting up a Catamount scoring chance on a direct kick just outside the box. Naya Marcil's shot sailed over the top of the goal. 
  • Western Carolina also had 12 corner kicks.
 News & Notes:
  • The Catamounts' 30 total shots ranked fifth in the WCU record books for shots in a match. 
  • Western Carolina has now won all nine meetings with VMI and outscored the Keydets 17-0. 
  • WCU picked up its 10th win on the season moving the team to a tie for sixth place for most Catamount wins in a season. 
  • Western Carolina is now 6-2 in road matches on the year – the most by a Catamount team since the 2013 club also had six. 
  • The Catamounts have shut out opponents eight times this season which is the most since the 2008 team had nine shutouts. 
  • Western Carolina is chasing the No. 2 seed on the SoCon Tournament. Should WCU earn that seed it would be the fourth time (2001, 2002, and 2008) since the program's inception the team has earned the No. 2 seed.

  • Western Carolina concludes the regular season Sunday at UNCG. The kick-off is set for 2 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN+.
