Catamounts Fall to UNCG; Earn No. 3 Seed in SoCon Championships

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Western Carolina women's soccer dropped a tough match on the road falling to UNCG 1-0 Sunday at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.
 
The Catamounts will be the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Southern Conference Championships and will get a rematch against UNCG whose win earned them a No. 6 seed. The two teams will play their quarterfinal match on the Furman campus at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29. 
 
 
Individual Leaders:
  • Senior goalkeeper Ashlee Owens had a strong performance, despite giving up the one goal. She had six saves in the contest including turning away a penalty kick attempt by the Spartans and a finger-tip save late in the first half. She falls to 4-4 on the year. 
  • Valentine Pursey was the only Catamount with multiple shot attempts ending the match with two. 
  • Aiyanah Tyler-Cooper earned a shutout in goal for UNCG and had five saves. 
  
Inside the Box Score
  • Owens was tough inside the sticks in the first half as she notched one of her six saves at the 32nd minute when she turned away Spartan Gabi Sanotra's penalty kick attempt. 
  • Late in the first half Catamount rookie, Kirsten Hahn saw a scoring chance for WCU turned away when the Spartan goalie turned her away on a shot near the bottom center. 
  • In the 50th minute, UNCG broke open the scoreless match on a goal scored by Mel Herrera. 
  • Pursey tried to answer at 50:16 but her attempt went wide left. 
  • In the 67th minute, Natalie McNally took a shot near the top of the goal, but the Spartan goalie got the save. It was the last shot attempt of the match for WCU.
  • Western Carolina had a total of eight shots in the contest while UNCG had 11. 
 
 News & Notes:
  • Western Carolina's No. 3 seed is the highest for the Catamounts under Head Coach Chad Miller. It is the highest seed for a WCU team since a No. 2 seed in 2008.
  • The Catamounts were picked sixth in the coaches preseason poll finishing three spots above the prediction. 
  • This will be the fifth time the Catamounts have faced UNCG in the conference championships. The Spartans hold a 4-0-1 advantage.
