Pursey's OT Golden Goal Sends Catamounts to SoCon Semi-Finals

Will face No. Seed Furman Sunday

GREENVILLE, S.C. – First Team All-Southern Conference selection, Valentine Pursey proved her mettle Friday night. She scored the golden goal vaulting No. 3 seed Western Carolina women's soccer to a 1-0 overtime win over No. 6 seed UNCG in the quarterfinals of the Southern Conference Championships at Stone Stadium. 
 
The Catamounts will face No. 2 seed Furman at 2 p.m. Sunday, in the semi-finals, with the winner punching its ticket to the SoCon finals on Nov. 6. 
 
 Individual Leaders:
  • Pursey did what Pursey does, score goals. She scored the lone goal in the match. 
  • Kirsten Hahn picked up an assist on Pursey's goal and led the Catamounts with five shots. 
  • Catamount senior goalkeeper Ashlee Owens put in a brilliant performance with four saves in the 92 minutes played. She improves to 5-4 on the season. 
  • UNCG goalkeeper Aiyanah Tyler-Cooper weathered a flurry of Catamount shots at the end of regulation, and the first minute of overtime, ending the match with six saves. 
 Inside the Box Score
  • After only five shots in the first half, Western Carolina had a more offensive game plan in the second half with nine shots in the second 45 minutes. 
  • The Catamounts had four shots in the span of two minutes, 82nd through 84th minute, including a Hahn, shot that just went wide missing the left side of the goal. 
  • UNCG had seven shots in the first half challenging the Catamount defensive backline but WCU shored up its defense and the Spartans didn't really threaten to score in the final 45 minutes of regulation. 
  • The Catamounts continued its aggressive offensive play in overtime. One minute in graduate Maryanne Kilgore's shot just missed going into the goa. 
  • That close play by Kilgore set up the score for Pursey. She took a pass from Hahn at the touchline back to Pursey who scored inside the left post from four yards out at 92:03.
 News & Notes:
  • Western Carolina returns to the SoCon semi-finals for the first time since 2017 facing Furman, the same team WCU will face on Sunday. 
  • The Catamounts earned their first victory over UNCG since 2012 halting five-consecutive losses to the Spartans and 10 of the last 11. 
  • The Catamounts are now 6-3 all-time in SoCon quarterfinal matches. 
  • The win over UNCG, in the SoCon tournament, is the second time in eight meetings with the Spartans, in the conference tourney, the Catamounts have come out on top. 
  • Pursey scored her seventh game-winning goal of the season which now gives her lone possession of the top spot in the nation. She also moves into a tie for first place with former Catamount Jordan Howell (2001).
  • Pursey now has scored nine goals on the season with a team-best 20 points. Her 20 points on the season rank tied for 10th in the WCU record books while her nine goals rank tied for sixth. 
  • Western Carolina's 11 wins on the season move the 2021 club into a tie for fifth place, with the team from 2019, for the most wins in a season. 
  • The 11 wins also tie for the most under Head Coach Chad Miller
  • Miller is the winningest coach in program history and now has 98 victories at Western Carolina.

Western Carolina, as the No. 3 seed, will face No. 2 seed Furman at 2 p.m. Sunday at Stone Stadium in Greenville, S.C.
