Men’s Golf Rallies to Fourth-Place Tie at Black Creek

Jake Peacock finished tied for sixth, Presten Richardson rallied 45 spots in final order

Chattanooga, Tenn. – Western Carolina true freshman Jake Peacock continued his tremendous start to his collegiate career, posting his fourth Top 10 finish of the fall semester on Tuesday by placing in a three-way tie for sixth to lead the Catamounts to a fourth-place tie at the Battle at Black Creek.

Ninth after 36 holes, WCU posted a final round score of 287 to finish at 1-under par 863 for the event held at the par-72, 7,204-yard Black Creek Club, moving up five spots in the final standings.

Peacock hovered around even-par most of the day on Tuesday, twice moving to 1-under par – once on the front nine just four holes in before a bogey on the par-3 seventh pushed him back to even at the turn. A second birdie on the par-4 10th moved him back to 1-under until consecutive bogeys relegated him to 1-over par with six holes to play. He came home with a third birdie and five pars including four-straight to conclude the round for his even-par 72 and three-round score of 212.

A product of Milton, Ga., Peacock finished the tournament with a team-best 14 birdies, tied for the sixth-most in the tournament field. He also finished third in the field in par-5 scoring at 8-under (4.33).

Sophomore Presten Richardson carded the team's lowest round on Tuesday with a second-consecutive round of 4-under par 68, finishing as the biggest gainer over the final 18 holes by climbing 45 spots into a tie for 22nd in the final standings with a total of 219, his second-best score of the season. The Miller, Mo., product countered a pair of bogeys with six birdies in the final round, finishing second on the squad with a dozen birdies.

Junior Magnus Pedersen posted a final-round score of 1-over par 73 to finish tied for 36th overall at 221, advancing 14 spots in the standings, while senior Louis Theys moved up eight spots into a tie for 54th with a final round 74 for a two-day total of 224. Senior Tumi Kúld rounded out the Catamount scoring five in a tie for 57th overall by shooting 78 on Tuesday for a three-round tally of 225. Kúld had 10 birdies over the two-day event while Pedersen finished with nine.

Playing unattached as an individual, Canadian-born freshman Kiefer Bulau posted his best 54-hole score of 227 and best career finish in a tie for 67th. Bulau finished with a team-best 36 pars over the 54-hole tournament. Junior Quinton Metz finished tied for 81st overall with a score of 235, shooting 79 over the final 18 holes.

Tournament host Chattanooga rallied to match UT-Martin for the team title as the two schools fired matching scores of 7-under par 857. Appalachian State climbed four spots to finish third overall at 862, with WCU finishing tied for fourth with Troy at 863.

Nick Sutton of Tennessee Tech claimed a five-stroke victory over USC Upstate's Max Dupree to claim medalist honors, 204-to-209.

Western Carolina plays its final event in the fall portion of its 2021-22 schedule, traveling to Daniel Island, S.C., for the Daniel Island Intercollegiate, hosted by Charleston Southern at the Daniel Island Club. The 54-hole event is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 31 and Monday, Nov. 1.
