Kushnir Leads Catamounts, WCU in Three-Way Tie for 10th

Final round of the fall semester slated for Monday morning

Daniel Island, S.C. – Freshman Kyle Kushnir fired a 1-over par 145 on Sunday to lead Western Carolina men's golf to a three-way tie for 10th place after 36 holes at Daniel Island Intercollegiate, hosted by Charleston Southern on the par-72, 7,424-yard Ralston Course at the Daniel Island Club. The Catamounts are tied with the host Buccaneers and Jacksonville State with a team score of 591.

The tournament's third round – WCU's final of the fall portion of its 2021-22 schedule – is scheduled for Monday morning with an 8:15 a.m. shotgun start. The Catamount scoring five will tee-off between holes No. 7 and No. 10, with live scoring online through BirdieFire.com.

Tied for 20th in the individual standings, Kushnir opened his tournament by countering three bogeys with a pair of birdies for a 1-over 73. In the second round, the Raleigh, N.C., native recovered from a 3-over start through the first four holes, closing his round with birdies on two of his final three holes to shoot even-par, 72.

Sophomore Presten Richardson is a stroke back at 146 in a tie for 28th overall with consecutive rounds of 1-over par 73. He countered three bogeys with a pair of birdies in the first round before carding one of just three eagles in Sunday's opening two rounds in the second to counter four bogeys.

Freshman Jake Peacock bounced back from an opening-round 4-over par 76 – just his second round not carded at even-par or better through the tremendous start to his collegiate career – carding a team-best 1-under par 71 in round two. He sits in a tie for 34th overall at 147 with four birdies over 36 holes. Peacock was among the tournament leaders in par-3, scoring at 1-under (2.75), while Richardson leads the tournament in par-5, scoring at 3-under par (4.25) on the longest layouts.

Rounding out WCU's scoring five are senior Louis Theys in a tie for 81st overall at 155 (80-75) and junior Magnus Pedersen tied for 89th at 157 (78-79). Pedersen had five birdies on Sunday, while Theys had three.

Seton Hall has its top three golfers among the Top 10 to lead the 20-team field after 36 of the scheduled 54 holes. The Pirates shot consecutive rounds of 282 for a total of 12-under par 564 to lead second-place Florida State (568) by four strokes. South Carolina is third at 571, with the College of Charleston and Virginia tied for fourth at 572 to round out the top five teams.

Pietro Bovari of Virginia carded rounds of 2-under par 70 and 5-under par 67 for a two-round total of 7-under par 137 to lead the 104-golfer field by a stroke over second-place Nevill Ruiter of the College of Charleston (138) by a stroke.
