Oduah Scores 26 in Catamounts Heartbreaking OT Loss to UNCA

Three Catamounts score in double figures

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Junior Vanessa Oduah led the Western Carolina women's basketball with 26 points in the Catamounts heartbreaking 74-72 overtime loss to UNC Asheville Friday on Ingles Court in the Ramsey Center.  
 
Turning Point:
With Western Carolina leading by one, 70-69, with 1:36 left in overtime, UNCA went on a 4-0 run to take a 73-70 lead and never relinquished the lead for the remainder of the extra frame. 
 
 Individual Leaders
  • Oduah scored a Catamount career-best 26 points including 5-for-5 from the free-throw line. She also had six rebounds. 
  • Sophomore Zanoria Cruz logged in 15 points. 
  • Redshirt junior Nadia Marshall had 11 points on the night adding seven rebounds. 
  • UNCA's Nadria Evans lead all scorers with 31 points and was one of three Bulldogs in double figures. 
 
 Inside the Box Score
  • Western trailed all the first half and took its first lead of the game field goal by Marshall with 2:24 left in the third. 
  • The Catamounts built its largest lead of the game, 12 points, 53-41 with 9:02 remaining and then the Bulldogs climbed back in the game. UNCA outscored the Catamounts 25-14 in the remaining nine-plus minutes of the fourth quarter to tie the game at 67 and force overtime. 
  • WCU clung to a 67-66 lead with 13 seconds remaining in the game but a costly Catamount foul with nine seconds remaining sent Faith Adams to the line for UNCA. Adams hit 1-of-2 free throws to tie the game and force overtime.
  • The Catamounts struggled in overtime with its first three possessions turnovers. WCU still battled in OT, and tied it at 69, but couldn't get that key basket at the end of the game. 
  • Western Carolina had 28 turnovers in the game as UNCA scored 35 points over Catamount's miscues. 
  • The Catamounts ripped down 37 rebounds to WCU's 30. 
  • Both teams shot lights out in the game as WCU shot a season-best 49.1 percent while the Bulldogs shot 43.58.
  • Western Carolina was 15-19 from the free-throw line. 
  • Western Carolina hit five three-pointers in the game. 
 
 News & Notes
  • Marshall scored in double figures for the second consecutive game of the young season. 
  • Oduah is the first Catamount to score 20 or more points on the year.
  • Western Carolina has scored 70 or more points in back-to-back games. 
  • Cruz tied her career with two three-pointers in the game. 
  • Oduah's 26 points are the most scored by a Catamount in a game since Jewell Smalls scored 32 points on Nov. 27, 2019.
  • Western Carolina's game against UNC was the second of a four-game homestand.
