BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Seniors
MaKenzie White and
Merry Gebel led WCU with 11 kills apiece, but the Catamounts were unable to hold off Wofford in a 3-1 loss in the Southern Conference quarterfinals at Samford's Pete Hanna Center on Friday afternoon. The Terriers won by scores of 25-20, 25-17, 23-25, and 25-19.
Wofford improves to 16-13 while WCU ends the season at 11-17.
White finished one kill shy of tying her season-best 12 kill performance against Rider while Gebel posted her 17
th double-double this season, adding 13 digs. Junior
Brooklyn Poling added a career-best eight kills. Sophomore
Destinee Dorsey logged a team-best 17 digs while senior
Sydney Carlson had a team-high 34 assists. Junior
Johnna Robinson swatted a team-leading six blocks.
Emory Wyatt paced three Terriers in double figures offensively with 14 kills followed by Kennedy Smith and Bella Zeman with 13. Sarah MacLean recorded nine kills and a match-best seven blocks. Kaitlyn Brown had a match-high 18 digs while Emily Hodsdon distributed a match-high 48 assists.
A
Bailey Hartsough kill gave WCU a 5-2 advantage in the first set before the Terriers evened the frame at six following a Catamount error. With the first set tied at 10, Wofford scored three of the next four points for a 13-11 lead before a Robinson kill brought the Catamounts within one, 14-13. The Terriers answered with a 5-1 run to grab control and led by no fewer than four points the rest of the way.
Wofford opened the second set on an 8-2 run before the Catamounts trimmed the deficit to three, 12-9, with a Gebel kill. After a Poling kill made the score 15-11 in favor of the Terriers, Wofford scored three straight points for an 18-11 lead and took a 2-0 lead in the match as a Barham kill closed out the set.
Trailing 21-19 in the third set, the Catamounts evened the frame at 21 thanks to kills by White and Robinson. Barham gave the Terriers a 22-21 edge before WCU used a Gebel kill and a Carlson service ace for a 23-22 lead. Smith tied the set at 23 before a Gebel kill gave the Catamounts set point and a block by Robinson and Poling clinched the frame for the Catamounts. The third set had three lead changes and was tied 12 times.
The Terriers took a 6-2 lead in the fourth set thanks to a Catamount error but the Catamounts didn't quit as a Poling kill brought WCU within two, 13-11. After Wofford scored three of the next four points for a 16-14 lead, a Gebel kill and a Terrier error evened the score at 16. The Terriers answered with a 7-0 run and clinched the match with an Addison Foote service ace.
