Catamounts Split Day Two Action at Stinger Classic

Rookie Maddaluna has five hits in three games

The Basics 
Score: Western Carolina 4, North Alabama 1: Tennessee Tech 2, Western Carolina 1

Location: Barbara Williams Stadium, Montgomery Ala.
 
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Western Carolina softball split day two action at the Stinger Classic hosted by Alabama State. The Catamounts opened the day with a 4-1 win over North Alabama and closed out the day with a 2-1 loss to Tennessee Tech. 
 
Western Carolina 4, North Alabama 1  
Turning Point 
North Alabama jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the third but the Catamounts exploded for three runs in the bottom of the frame and tacked on a fourth run in the bottom of the fifth. 
 
 How it Happened 
  • An RBI single in the top of the third gave the Lions an early 1-0 lead.
  • The North Alabama lead was short-lived as Western Carolina plated three runs in the bottom of the third. Savannah Baldwin and Bailey Treadway drew back-to-back walks moving up a base each after a double steal. Morgan Maddaluna hit an RBI single scoring Baldwin to tie the game 1-1. With one out, Bailey Huneycutt hit an RBI single to left field followed by a sacrifice fly by Kailey McNeil sending in the third run of the inning. 
  • In the bottom of the fifth, Claudia Riddle led off with a double, stole third, and scored thanks to an RBI single by Addie Pate
 
Inside the Box Score 
  • Sophomore pitcher Savannah Rice got her first start of the season tossing a complete game earning her first win of the season. She gave up one run on three hits and struck out one. 
  • Western Carolina had four hits in the game.
  • The Catamounts set North Alabama down in order four times in the game. 
 
 
Tennessee Tech 2, Western Carolina 1
 Turning Point 
 Western Carolina got on the board first scoring a run in the second but Tennessee Tech came back in the bottom of the third to plate two runs and held the lead the remainder of the game. 
 
 How it Happened 
  • The Catamounts jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second. Pate led off the inning with a single and Anna Paige Pelfrey followed with a double. Lindsay Perrillo had a sacrifice fly RBI scoring Pate. 
  • Tennessee Tech scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the third and held onto the lead for the remainder of the game. 
 
 Inside the Box Score 
  • Freshman pitcher Jayme Eilers got her second start of the season and dropped to 1-1 on the season. She gave up two runs on six hits and struck out six. 
  • Tennessee Tech had six hits while WCU had five. Both teams had an error in the game. 
  • Western Carolina had the tying run on first when pinch hitter Myra Twitty walked in the top of the seventh, but the Catamounts couldn't get the run across. 
 
 News & Notes 
  • Maddaluna has gotten at least one hit in the first three games of the season. She has five hits, scored three runs, and has an RBI in the first three games at the Stinger Classic. 
  • Rice got a win in her first start of the season with the Catamounts in back-to-back seasons. She pitched a complete game in the 2-0 win at Clemson on Feb. 12, 2020. 
  • In the first three games of the year, Western Carolina has eight extra-base hits – six doubles and two home runs. 
  • Western Carolina is 0-2 all-time against Tennessee Tech.
