Catamounts Fall to Tennessee Tech in Final Day of Stinger Classic

Will compete in Troy Invitational Next Weekend

The Basics 
Score: Tennessee Tech 9, Western Carolina 2

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Western Carolina softball closed out the final day of the Stinger Classic, hosted by Alabama State, by dropping a 9-2 game against Tennessee Tech Sunday in Montgomery, Ala. 
 
Turning Point 
Western Carolina took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first but Tennessee Tech scored six unanswered runs in the, three in the third, and three in the fourth inning to build a 6-1 lead. The Golden Eagles added three more runs in the seventh.
 
 How it Happened 
  • The Catamounts took an early lead off Tennessee Tech miscues. Bailey Huneycutt drew a walk and moved to third on a passed ball. She scored from a wild pitch. 
  • The Golden Eagles scored three runs in the third and three in the fourth. 
  • Western Carolina got one run back in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, Kailey McNeil singled up the middle. Samantha Reele came in to pinch run for McNeil and scored from an RBI double by Addie Pate
  • Tennessee Tech tacked on three more runs in the top of the seventh. 
 
 Inside the Box Score 
  • Sophomore pitcher Savannah Rice got the start and takes the loss in the game. She tossed 5.1 innings giving up six runs on six hits and falls to 1-1 on the year. 
  • Kayla Brewer replaced Rice with one out in the sixth. She closed out the game allowing three runs, two earned, on three hits. 
  • Tennessee Tech had nine hits in the game while WCU had two. 
  • Huneycutt and Pate each had a hit in the game. 
 
 News & Notes 
  • Pate has had at least one hit in all four games to start the season. She has also had an RBI in three of the four games. 
  • After starting the season on a two-game winning streak, the Catamounts are now on a two-game winning streak.
  • WCU will face its second consecutive team from the state of Tennessee next weekend. After playing a pair of games with Tennessee Tech this weekend, the Catamounts will square off against Austin Peay next weekend at the Troy Invitational. 
 
Up Next 
Western Carolina travels to Troy, Ala. next weekend to compete in the Troy Invitational. The tournament is set for Feb. 19-21 and the team will play Austin Peay and host Troy.
