Softball Falls to Troy

The Basics 
Score: Troy 7, Western Carolina 1

Location: Troy Softball Stadium, Troy, Ala.
 
TROY, Ala. – Western Carolina softball fell to Troy 9-1, in five innings, Friday in game one of the Troy Invitational at the Troy Softball Stadium. 
 
Turning Point 
Troy scored six runs in the first two innings in which they scored two runs in the first and four runs in the second inning. 
 
 How it Happened 
  • Catamount pitching gave up three consecutive walks to open Troy's half of the first inning. The Trojans turned that into two runs to end the first inning.
  • The Trojans tacked on four runs in the second. 
  • Western Carolina got on the board in the third inning. Senior Danielle Chapman drew a lead-off walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Amber Parker. Morgan Maddaluna singled to left field moving Chapman to third. A double steal pushed Maddaluna to second and Chapman stole home.
  • After holding Troy scoreless for two innings, the Trojans plated three runs in the fifth to end the game early.   
 
 Inside the Box Score 
  • Sophomore pitcher Jayme Eilers started the game but was pulled in the first inning after three straight walks and facing three batters. She gave up two runs and falls to 1-2 on the season. 
  • Sophomore hurler Savannah Rice replaced Eilers in the first inning and went 4.1 innings giving up seven runs, only two earned, on six hits, walked four, and struck out three.
  • Troy had six hits in the game and Western Carolina had four. The Catamounts had three errors in the game. 
  • Maddaluna, Bailey Huneycutt, Pelfrey, and Lambert each had hits in the game. 
 
News & Notes 
  • Huneycutt has had a hit in all five games to start the season. 
  • Maddaluna has a hit in four of the first five games and has three stolen bases. 
  • Western Carolina is suffering through a three-game losing streak. 
  • The Catamounts are now 0-2 against Troy all-time. 
 
Up Next 
Western Carolina will play a pair of games Saturday on day two of the Troy Invitational. The Catamounts open the day facing Austin Peay at 11 a.m. Eastern and close the day with a re-match with Troy at 1:30 p.m. Eastern.
