Softball Drops Pair of Games at Troy Invitational

Catamounts conclude play Sunday against Austin Peay

The Basics

TROY, Ala. – Western Carolina softball fell dropped a pair of games on day two of the Troy Invitational falling to Austin Peay 6-2 and dropping the nightcap to host Troy 4-0. 
 
Austin Peay 6, Western Carolina 2 
 
Turning Point 
Austin Peay scored runs in the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth inning to secure the win. 
 
 How it Happened 
  • Senior Kailey McNeil's lead-off home run in the top of the second gave Western Carolina the early 1-0 lead.
  • Austin Peay tied the game with a run in the third inning.
  • The Govs followed the third inning with two runs in the fourth and a run in the fifth to lead 4-2. 
  • Western Carolina cut the Govs' lead in half in the bottom of the fifth inning. With two outs, Jeralynn Wells hit a single up the middle and Claudia Riddle pushed her to third on a double down the left-field line. Pinch hitter Myra Twitty hit an RBI single past the shortstop to score Wells.
  • The Govs plated two more runs in the sixth inning. 
 
 Inside the Box Score 
  • Sophomore pitcher Savannah Rice tossed six innings giving up six runs, five earned, walking four, and striking out two. She falls to 1-2 on the season. 
  • Caitlin Griffin replaced Rice in the top of the seventh tossing one inning of scoreless ball.
  • Western Carolina had seven hits in the game and Austin Peay had eight. Three of the Catamount's hits were for extra bases – two doubles and a home run. 
  • WCU left seven runners on base.

Turning Point 
Troy had home runs in the first and third inning and capped off the game with two runs in the fourth. The Catamounts were held scoreless. 
 
 How it Happened 
  • The Trojans led off the first inning and the third inning with home runs.
  • Troy added two runs in the fourth. 
  Inside the Box Score 
  • Sophomore pitcher Jayme Eilers tossed the complete game allowing four runs, three earned, walking four, and striking out eight. 
  • Anna Paige Pelfrey spoiled Troy pitcher Libby Baker's no-hitter with a single to left field in the top of the seventh inning. 
  • After Troy scored the two runs in the fourth Western Carolina pitching and defense sat down the next six batters in the ensuing final two innings. 
  News & Notes 
  • Western Carolina was shut out for the first time this season with the 4-0 loss to Troy. 
  • Griffin saw her first action on the mound.
  • Eilers leads the team with 21 strikeouts. 
  • Of Western Carolina's 35 hits on the season, 12 are extra base hits.
