Twitty Hits Three-Run Bomb as Catamounts' Comeback Falls Short

The Basics

TROY, Ala. – Western Carolina softball closed out action at the Troy Invitational with a 7-5 loss to Austin Peay Sunday at the Troy Softball Stadium. 
 
Turning Point 
After two scoreless innings to open the game, Austin Peay scored seven unanswered runs and weathered a five-run inning by the Catamounts in the sixth to secure the win. 
 
 How it Happened 
  • In the bottom of the third Austin Peay plated four runs after a single and a pair of walks loaded the bases for the Govs. 
  • The Govs tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fifth. 
  • Western Carolina got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth inning when Addie Pate was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, Bailey Huneycutt followed with a single to right field, and pinch hitter Samantha Reele singled to load the bases. Anna Paige Pelfrey hit a two-RBI single down the left-field line scoring Pate and Huneycutt. Pinch hitter Myra Twitty hit a three-RBI bomb with no outs for a five-run sixth for the Catamounts.
 
 Inside the Box Score 
  • In the third inning, Western Carolina had a strong chance at scoring as Amber Parker led off with a double and Lindsay Perillo followed with a single to put runners at the corners with no outs. The pair were stranded with three straight outs by the Catamounts. 
  • Western Carolina got an unconventional double play to erase Austin Peay's scoring chance in the fourth inning. With one out, the Govs singled but the Catamount defense got an out at second and gunned down a runner at home for two outs to end the inning. 
  • Parker had a pair of hits in the game. 
  • Sophomore pitcher Jayme Eilers got the start and takes the loss falling to 1-4 on the season. She went four innings giving up seven runs, six earned, on eight hits, and struck out five. 
  • Caitlin Griffin came into the game to relieve Eilers in the fifth inning with no outs. She tossed two scoreless innings allowing one hit and striking out one.  
  • Western Carolina ended the game with seven hits and Austin Peay had nine.
  • The Catamounts had three errors in the game. 
 
 News & Notes 
  • After opening the season 2-0, Western Carolina is suffering through six straight losses. 
  • Eilers led the pitching staff with 26 strikeouts on the season. In her career, Eilers has 49 strikeouts ranking 16th in the WCU record books for strikeouts in a career. 
  • For the season, Western Carolina has 42 hits with 14 for extra bases. 
  • In three innings of relief, Griffin has not allowed a run.

Western Carolina travels to Charlotte, N.C. to compete in the First Pitch Classic hosted by Charlotte Feb. 27-28. The Catamounts will take on Charlotte and Longwood in the tournament.
