Catamounts Drop Pair of Games Against Charlotte

Will Face Charlotte and Longwood Sunday

The Basics 
Score: Charlotte 15, Western Carolina 4 (5 inn.); Charlotte 4, Western Carolina 3
Records: Western Carolina 2-8, Charlotte 6-4
Location: Sue M. Dautridge Stadium, Charlotte, N.C.  
 
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Western Carolina softball dropped a pair of games to host Charlotte on day one of the First Pitch Classic. The Catamounts dropped game one 15-4, in five innings, and dropped the second game 4-3 in the second game of the day at Sue M. Dautridge Stadium.

Turning Point 
Charlotte led by one run, 2-1 after two innings, but used a 10-run third inning and tacked on three runs in the fourth to put the game out of reach. 
 
 How it Happened 
  •  Charlotte took the early lead scoring a run in the bottom of the first. 
  •  Freshman Riley Lambert's first home run of her career, in the top of the second, tied the game at 1-1. 
  •  The 49ers scored the first of 14 unanswered runs when it re-took the lead with a run in the bottom of the second and plated 10 runs in the top of the third. Charlotte added three more runs in the fourth. 
  •  Western Carolina scored its first multiple runs in an inning when it scored three runs in the top of the fifth. Jeralynn Wells led off the inning with a single and moved to third when Caitlin Griffin singled down the right-field line to push Wells to third. Bailey Huneycutt picked up an RBI single, scoring Wells, and Riddle and Huneycutt scored from a two-RBI single by Kailey McNeil
 
 
 Inside the Box Score 
  • Sophomore pitcher Savannah Rice got the start and took the loss falling to 1-3 on the season. She tossed 2.2 innings giving up 10 runs, only four earned, walked two, and struck out two. 
  • Freshman Griffin relieved Rice to close out the game throwing the final 1.1 innings. She gave up six hits and five runs – but none of the runs were earned. 
  • Western Carolina defensively has three errors in the game equating to 11 of Charlotte's 15 runs being unearned. 
  • Charlotte had 13 hits in the game while WCU had eight. 
  • Anna-Paige Pelfrey went 2-for-3 in the game.

Turning Point 
With Western Carolina leading 3-2, in the bottom of the sixth, Charlotte hit a pair of home runs to tie and take the lead and win the game. 
 
 How it Happened 
  •  Western Carolina took an early 2-0 lead scoring a pair of runs in the top of the second. Pelfrey led off with a double and a sacrifice bunt by Amber Parker pushed her to second. Addie Pate's RBI single plated Pelfrey and an RBI double by Myra Twitty scored Pate. 
  • Charlotte tied the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second. 
  • Junior Bailey Huneycutt's solo home run in the top of the third allowed Western Carolina to re-take the lead, 3-2. 
  • The 49ers secured the win with a pair of home runs in the bottom of the sixth. 
 
 Inside the Box Score 
  • Sophomore pitcher Jayme Eilers tossed a complete game and took the loss falling to 1-5 on the season. She gave up six hits, four runs, and struck out four. 
  • Huneycutt was 3-for-4 in the game with a home run, a run scored, and an RBI. 
  • The Catamounts had nine hits in the game and Charlotte had six. 
  • After three errors in game one against Charlotte, Western Carolina played error-free ball in game two. 
 
News & Notes 
  • Charlotte is enjoying its first two-game winning streak over Western Carolina since the 49ers had a pair of wins over the Catamounts in the 2006 and 2007 seasons. Western Carolina has won seven of the last 10 games over Charlotte. 
  • Huneycutt hit her second home run of the season and leads the team with 10 hits on the season. 
  • Pelfrey is on an eight-game hit streak.

Western Carolina closes out play at the First Pitch Classic Sunday taking on host Charlotte at 10 a.m. and facing Longwood at 4 p.m.
