Catamounts Earn Win Over Longwood; Split Day 2 Action at First Pitch Classic

Uses big 5-run 3rd to secure win

The Basics 
 Score: Charlotte 9, Western Carolina 2; Western Carolina 6, Longwood 4

 CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Western Carolina softball split the final pair of games on the final day of the First Pitch Classic hosted by Charlotte. The Catamounts dropped the morning game to the 49ers 9-2 and bounced back to defeat Longwood 6-4.

Turning Point 
Charlotte scored five runs in the bottom of the third with five runs in the fourth and four in the sixth and held Western Carolina to two runs. 
 
How it Happened 
  • The Catamounts too an early 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth. Kailey McNeil singled and came around to score on a ground-out RBI by Myra Twitty
  • The 49ers exploded for five runs in the bottom of the fourth assisted by three Catamount errors. 
  • Western Carolina cut into the 49ers' lead with a run in the top of the fifth. Claudia Riddle drew a walk and scored when hit an RBI single to the right field. 
  • Charlotte put the game out of reach with four runs in the bottom of the sixth.
  Inside the Box Score 
  • Sophomore pitcher Savannah Rice tossed the complete game falling to 1-4 on the season. She gave up seven hits, nine runs, four earned, walked six, and struck out three. 
  • Western Carolina had four hits in the game and the 49ers had seven. 
  • Riddle had three walks in the game.

Turning Point 
Trailing 1-0, Western Carolina plated five runs in the bottom of the third and weathered a three-run six by the Lancers. 
 
How it Happened 
  • Longwood took the early 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the second.
  • The Catamounts had the big inning it had been searching for with five runs in the bottom of the third. Savannah Baldwin led off the inning with a single through the left side. When Baldwin was erased at second on a fielder's choice by Lindsay Perillo, Anna-Paige Pelfrey walked to put a pair of Catamounts on base. McNeil's RBI single to centerfield scored Perillo and tied the game 1-1. A Longwood error in the inning allowed Addie Pate to reach first and Pelfrey to score. Amber Parker followed with an RBI single scoring McNeil and Myra Twitty closed out the inning with a two-RBI double. 
  • McNeil's solo home run in the fourth inning put WCU up 6-1. 
  • The McNeil home run proved to be good padding as Longwood attempted a comeback with three runs in the top of the sixth. 
 
 
 Inside the Box Score 
  • Sophomore pitcher Jayme Eilers earned her second win of the season improving to 2-5 on the season with her complete game. She allowed four runs on five hits, walked two, and struck out six. 
  • The Catamounts had eight hits in the game and Longwood had five. 
  • McNeil and Twitty each had a pair of hits in the game. McNeil also scored two runs and had two RBI. 
 
 News & Notes 
  • Western Carolina halted a nine-game losing streak with the win over Longwood. It was Western Carolina's first win over the Lancers. 
  • Pelfrey is on a 10-game hit streak. 
  • McNeil has reached base safely in seven consecutive games. 
  • Western Carolina has 71 hits this season with 22 for extra-base hits (15 doubles and seven home runs.)
