Softball Swept by Radford Despite Combined 16 Runs in Both Games

McNeil had four hits and five RBI in pair of games

The Basics 
 Score: Radford 9, Western Carolina 8 (10); Radford 12, Western Carolina 8
 Records: Western Carolina 3-11, Radford 4-8
 Location: Radford, Va., Radford Softball Stadium
 
RADFORD, Va. – Despite scoring a combined 16 runs, in a pair of games at Radford, Western Carolina softball was swept by the Highlanders 9-8, in 10 innings, and 12-8 Friday at the Radford Softball Stadium. 
 
Radford 9, Western Carolina 8 (10 innings)
 
Turning Point 
Radford used a walk-off RBI single to snap an 8-8 tie and win the game 9-8 in the bottom of the 10th inning. 
 
How it Happened 
  • Kaily McNeil's RBI double, in the first inning, scored Bailey Huneycutt and gave Western Carolina an early 1-0 lead.
  • Radford scored three runs in the bottom of the first. 
  • Freshman Jeralynn Wells RBI single plated Amber Parker and the Catamounts cut the Highlander lead to one, 3-2. 
  • Radford used another big inning to plate four runs in the bottom of the second. 
  • The Catamounts came back and scored three runs in the top of the third. Three straight singles by Claudia Riddle, Lindsay Perrilo, and Huneycutt loaded the bases. McNeil earned her second RBI with a single that scored Riddle. An RBI single by Anna-Paige Pelfrey scored Perrilo for the second run of the inning. Myra Twitty's RBI single through the left side scored Huneycutt for the third run. 
  • In the fourth inning, Riddle singled and stole second, and scored from an RBI single by Perillo to push WCU within one run of Radford, 7-6. 
  • Western Carolina took its second lead of the game scoring two runs in the top of the sixth to go up 8-7 thanks to a two-RBI home run by Huneycutt.
  • Radford scored a run in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game 8-8 forcing extra innings and held on until they could score the go-ahead run in the 10th. 
 
 
 Inside the Box Score 
  • Sophomore pitcher Jayme Eilers tossed all nine innings and takes the loss falling to 2-6 on the season. She allowed 15 hits, allowed nine runs, walked four, and struck out four. 
  • Western Carolina had had 14 hits in the game. 
  • Perillo and Huneycutt were each 3-for-5 in the game. Huneycutt also scored three runs. 
 
Radford 12, Western Carolina 8
 
Turning Point 
Tied 6-6, used a big five-run fifth inning, and tacked on an insurance in the bottom of the sixth to stave off Western Carolina. 
 
How it Happened 
  • A Riddle single and a walk by Huneycutt set up an RBI single by Twitty scoring Riddle and putting WCU up 1-0 after the Catamounts' half of the first. 
  • Radford scored six runs over the first and second inning to lead 6-1.
  • The Catamounts clawed back to tie the game 6-6 with four runs in the top of the fourth. Pinch hitter Savannah Baldwin led off the inning with a single and Pate followed with a walk. Wells' RBI single to centerfield scored Baldwin for the first run of the inning. Riddle walked to load the bases and the first out came when Perillo reached on a fielder's choice and Pate was out at home. Radford got a second out at the plate when Huneycutt also hit into a fielder's choice and Wells was out at home. McNeil followed by clearing the bases with a three-RBI double to left field.
  • Radford, like in game one, came back with a vengeance scoring five runs in the bottom of the fifth to lead 11-6. 
  • Western Carolina battled and pulled within three runs, 11-8, with two runs in the top of the sixth. Huneycutt led off with a walk, and with two outs, Samantha Reele came in to hit a two-run home run.
  • Radford added a dagger run in the bottom of the sixth. 
 
 
 Inside the Box Score 
  • Sophomore pitcher Savannah Rice took the loss tossing five runs giving up 11 runs on 10 hits walked seven and struck out three. She falls to 1-5 on the season. 
  • Caitlin Griffin relieved Rice tossing one inning allowing one run on two hits facing six batters. 
  • Radford had 12 hits and Western Carolina had 11. 
  • Baldwin came into the game and went 3-for-4 and a run scored. 
 
 
News & Notes 
  • Western Carolina's 14 hits, in game one against Radford, was a season-high,
  • The eight runs, in both games against the Highlanders, was also a season-high by the Catamounts. 
  • Through 14 games, Huneycutt has a .389 batting average with a team-leading 14 hits, has scored 10 runs, hit one double, three home runs, and has eight RBI. 
  • The three runs scored by Huneycutt in game one against Radford is a season-high. 
 
Up Next 
Western Carolina will take a few days off before playing in its final tournament of the season when the Catamounts will play in the Mercer Bear Classic in Macon, Ga Mar. 13-14. WCU will face Southern Mississippi, Presbyterian and Winthrop.
