Softball Splits Day One at Mercer Bears Classic

Rice fans career-high 10 in win over Presbyterian

The Basics 
 Score: Southern Mississippi 2, Western Carolina 0; Western Carolina 7, Presbyterian 2
 Records: Western Carolina 4-12, Presbyterian 5-3
 Location: Macon, Ga., Sikes Field
 
 MACON, Ga. – Western Carolina split the first day of action Saturday at the Mercer Bears Classic dropping the first game of the day 2-0 to Southern Mississippi and bouncing back to defeat Presbyterian 7-2 in the nightcap at Sikes Field.

Turning Point 
Southern Miss scored a run in the first inning and added an insurance run in the top of the sixth. 
 
How it Happened 
  • Southern Miss didn't waste any time scoring a run in the top of the first inning. The Golden Eagles loaded the bases with a lead-off single followed by a double and walk. The Catamounts turned a double play to erase two runners by the sacrifice fly amidst the double play played a Southern Miss run. 
  • Western Carolina had runners on base in four of the seven innings and had strong scoring chances in the sixth and seventh inning. The Catamounts had two runners on in the sixth inning but Lindsay Perrilo was caught stealing third to end the inning. 
  • Southern Miss added an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning. 
  • In the bottom of the seventh, Myra Twitty doubled to right field to lead off the bottom half of the inning and thrice the Catamounts had the tying run at the plate but failed to score. 
 
  Inside the Box Score 
  • Sophomore pitcher Jayme Eilers tossed a complete game giving up two runs on eight hits and striking out three. She falls to 2-7 on the year. 
  • Western Carolina had three hits in the game. 
  • Southern Miss left nine runners on base while WCU stranded nine.

Turning Point 
Western Carolina scored in four of seven innings including two hits in the first inning and three in the fourth and only gave up two runs in the game. 
 
How it Happened 
  • Western Carolina jumped out to an early 2-0 lead which began with Claudia Riddle's lead-off single. With one out, Bailey Huneycutt doubled to right field putting runners at second and third. Myra Twitty hit a two-out two-RBI single up the middle scoring Riddle and Huneycutt. 
  • Twitty struck again in the third inning. Bailey Hunecutt reached first on a fielder's choice and came around to score from a groundout RBI by Twitty. 
  • The Catamounts plated three runs in the fourth. Jeralynn Wells led off with a single and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Savannah Baldwin. Addie Pate reached first on a dropped fly ball at first and Wells scored. Riddle followed with a walk and Pate and Wells scored on a two-RBI double by Lindsay Perillo
  • The Blue Hose threatened in the bottom half of the fourth. Presbyterian drew back-to-back walks but Catamount hurler Savannah Rice had three-consecutive strikeouts looking to end the threat. 
  • Presbyterian got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning thanks to a lead-off home run by Rebecca Clark. 
  • Western Carolina got the run back in the top of the sixth inning. Baldwin led off with a double down the left-field line and scored courtesy of an RBI single to left field by Riddle. 
  • A walk and a Presbyterian single put a runner in scoring position for the Blue Hose and the club capitalized thanks to an RBI single up the middle for its second run of the game. 
 
 
 Inside the Box Score 
  • Sophomore hurler Rice fanned a career-high 10 batters and takes the win improving to 2-5 on the year. She had a no-hitter going through four innings before giving up a home run in the fifth. She tossed a complete game giving up two runs on three hits and walked five. 
  • The Catamounts had 10 hits in the contest. 
  • Riddle and McNeil each had a pair of hits in the game and Riddle also scored a pair of runs.  
  • Twitty had one hit and three RBI while Huneycutt scored two runs. 
 
News & Notes 
  • Western Carolina's scheduled doubleheader with USC Upstate Monday, Mar. 15, has been postponed and rescheduled for Mar. 31 in Cullowhee. 
  • With the shutout against Southern Miss, WCU has been held scoreless in a game for the second time this season.
  • Western Carolina's 10 hits against Presbyterian marks the fourth time this season the Catamounts have had double-digit hits in a game. 
  • The win over the Blue Hose halts a three-game losing streak.  
  • Huneycutt has had a hit in seven of the last 10 games and has reached base safely in the last eight contests. 
  • Wells is on a six-game hitting streak while Twitty is on a five-game hit streak. 
  • Eilers has 66 strikeouts in her career ranking 16th in the WCU record books. She needs three to move into 15th place.

Western Carolina concludes play in the Mercer Bears Classic Sunday taking on Southern Miss at 9 a.m. and Winthrop at 1:30 p.m.
