CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina volleyball plays its third match out of five-straight inside the Ramsey Center on Wednesday evening as the Catamounts host Wofford at 6 p.m. in Southern Conference play.
Due to an unforseen scheduling issue, Wednesday's match will not be available on ESPN+ as originally planned and advertised.
Wednesday's match, the first of two rescheduled contests against the Terriers. The Catamounts and Terriers were scheduled to open the season against each other on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1, but the matches were postponed due to COVID-19 protocols. The teams will meet again on March 25 in Cullowhee to complete the regular-season series.
Coming off an open weekend, WCU is 3-5 overall and 3-3 in the Southern Conference after sweeping Chattanooga in matches on Feb. 14 and 15. Junior
Merry Gebel led the Catamounts with 15 kills in both matches against the Mocs. Gebel ranks third in the SoCon in kills, averaging 3.69 per set. Freshman
Destinee Dorsey was named the SoCon Defensive Player of the Week on Feb. 16 after averaging 5.3 digs per set in the two matches. The Mobile, Ala., native ranks third in the league defensively with 4.45 digs per set while Gebel is fifth (3.83 digs/set).
Wofford is 4-2 both overall and in the SoCon after two home wins over ETSU on Sunday and Monday. The Terriers took a 3-1 win on Sunday afternoon and swept the Bucs on Monday. Wofford is 4-0 at home this season with two wins each against Chattanooga and ETSU, but 0-2 on the road after being swept by league-leader Samford in Birmingham, Ala. Bella Zeman leads Wofford with a 3.39 kill per set average – fifth in the SoCon – while Abby Richman is seventh in digs per set (3.57).
The teams have met 42 previous times with WCU leading the series 26-16. Both teams protected their home courts in 2019 with WCU earning a 3-1 win on Oct.12 in Cullowhee and Wofford sweeping the Catamounts on Nov. 8 in Spartanburg, S.C.
The Catamounts remain at home this weekend, hosting ETSU for a pair of matches on Sunday at 3 p.m. and Monday at 5 p.m., both scheduled to be broadcast on ESPN+ (
paid subscription required).
