Mezzina has career-high eight saves

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Western Carolina women's soccer fell on the road to Liberty 1-0 Thursday at the Luurtsema Center.
 
Turning Point:
Liberty scored the only goal in the match in the 33rd minute.
 
 Individual Leaders
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Melody Mezzina allowed one goal and notched a career-high eight saves in the match. She falls to 1-2 on the season. 
  • Senior Regan Ward and freshman Naomi Campbell each had two shots in the match.
  • Liberty's Chloe Marr scored the only goal in the match.
  • The Flames' goalie Melody Jayroe did not record a save and took the win. 
 
 Inside the Box Score
  • In the 33rd minute, Liberty got on the board when Marr scored from an assist by Elise Lawson. Catamount goalkeeper Mezzina was pulled out from the goal by the attacking Flames and Marr snuck by for the score. 
  • The Flames had 20 shots in the match with 10 on goal. 
  • Western Carolina had nine shots in the match but none were on goal. 
  • Mezzina kept the Flames off the scoreboard for their second goal when she turned away a penalty kick attempt by Lawson. Mezzina picked up her eighth save of the match on the PK. 
  • Liberty had six corner kicks and Western Carolina had three. 
 
News & Notes 
  • Mezzina's eight saves in the match tie her for 20th in the WCU record books for saves in a game. She now had 52 saves in her career tying her for ninth place in the Catamount record books for saves in a career. 
  • Western Carolina has not scored a goal in the last 180 minutes of play. 
 
Up Next
Western Carolina will take a few days off and enter Southern Conference play next Friday, March 5, hosting VMI. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
