Tennis Drops Heartbreaker to UNCG, 4-3

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina lost a hard-fought battle to visiting UNCG 4-3 Saturday at the Catamount Tennis Complex. 
 
TURNING POINT:
The match was tied 3-3 and came down to the No. 3 singles match between Western Carolina's Jacy Smith and UNCG's Hanna Giddings. The three-set match fell the Spartans' and Giddings' way when she took the three-set match 7-6 (9-7), 4-6, 7-6 (3-7).
 
 INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Western Carolina breezed through the doubles matches, sweeping the doubles point to lead 1-0 heading into singles. 
  • After Antonella Benavides won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 singles for the Catamounts, the Spartans came back to win at No. 6 and No. 4 singles. 
  • Rookie Kata Foldeak put Western Carolina up 3-2 when she won at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3). 
  • UNCG tied the match 3-3 when Brianna Gomez outlasted Western Carolina's Anna Uljanov in three sets (6-4, 4-6, 6-4). 
  • Junior Smith battled to the end at No. 3 singles even tying the match at 6-6 in the third set but couldn't shake Giddings end the end. 
 
NOTES:
  • Smith's win in doubles gives her 23 in her career ranking sixth in the WCU record books. One win will move her into a tie for fifth place and two will push her to fourth. 
  • The match with Belmont on Sunday will be the fifth meeting between the two teams with both clubs having won two matches. The Catamounts have lost the last two meetings.
