Marshall Has Career Performance in Heartbreaking OT Loss to Mercer

Marshall Scores career-high 26 and 17 rebounds for double-double

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina women's basketball dropped an absolute heartbreaker in overtime to visiting Mercer 69-62 Thursday in the Ramsey Center. Redshirt sophomore Nadia Marshall had a career performance in the game with a double-double 26 points and 17 rebounds.
 
Turning Point:
Mercer outscored Western Carolina 24-12 in the fourth quarter to battle back from being down by 16, with 3:01 left in the third, to tie the game at 59 and force overtime. The Bears outscored the Catamounts 10-3 in overtime to seal the comeback win. 
 
 Individual Leaders
  • Marshall scored a career-high 26 points along with a career-best 17 rebounds to record her second-consecutive double-double and third of the season. 
  • Freshman Zanoria Cruz had 17 points and seven rebounds. 
  • Sophomore Andrea Martin Ruiz dished out six assists and swiped four steals. 
  • Mercer Shannon Titus led the Bears with 22 points. 
  Inside the Box Score
  • Western Carolina led for over 38 minutes before Mercer took its first lead in overtime. 
  • The Catamounts held the Bears to three points, and just one field goal, in the second quarter. 
  • Mercer was 1-of-7 from the three-point line while WCU drained three in the game. 
  • The Bears scored 34 points inside the paint while the Catamounts scored 28.
  • Mercer ended the game shooting 42.2 percent in the game while WCU shot 38.6 percent.
  • Western Carolina was 15-of-19 from the free-throw line.
  • The Catamounts outrebounded the Bears by 10, 43-33, ripping down 30 from the defensive end.

  • Lauren LaPlant has 157 career three-pointers, ranking tied for fourth the WCU record books, and needs one to take over fourth outright. 
  • Marshall has scored in double figures in the last four games.
  • In the last four games, Marshall is averaging 15.5 points per game.
  • Marshall's 17 rebounds, against Mercer, ranks 18th in the WCU record books for most rebounds in a game.

  • Marshall becomes the fourth Catamounts to score 20 or more points on the season. Her 26 points are the most scored by a Catamount this season.
  • The 62 points Western Carolina scored against Mercer is the third most points scored on the Bears in conference play this season. 
  • The overtime game against Mercer is the second time in the team's 20 meetings the two teams have gone into overtime. On Jan. 9, 2016, WCU lost 92-88 in OT, that game was also played in Cullowhee. It was also the first overtime for WCU this season.

Western Carolina will look to split with Mercer on Saturday when the two teams face-off at 2 p.m. in the Ramsey Center.
