Women's Tennis Adds Pair of Signees for 2021-22 Season

Players from Turkey and Spain

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina head women's tennis coach Bret Beaver announced today two additions to the upcoming 2021-22 class. Both bring an international flair to the Catamount tennis program as Angela Perez hails from Tarragona, Spain, and Miray Konar from Izmir, Turkey.

"The team and I are very excited to welcome Àngela and Miray," said Beaver. "I look forward to both players arriving to campus and continuing their success on the court while excelling in the classroom."

Perez, who plays for the club team Club Tennis Reus Monterols, is ranked 58th nationally in all ages in Spain. In March 2020, she won the Catalonia Championship, and in 2017, won the Provincial Children's Individual Championship.

"Àngela has had great success on a national level in Spain," Beaver said. "Àngela most recently won a national tournament in Spain against another top nationally ranked player from Spain." (Moved down below the paragraph about her)

Konar, who plays for Doga College, is ranked 11th nationally in all ages in Turkey, ranked third nationally for her age, and has an ITF junior ranking of 595. She played in the semi-finals of the National Championship Under-18 tournament in 2019. She is currently training at the Turkey Olympic Preparation Center and has been since she was 15. She played a final in singles J5 once, semifinal J5 once, twice J5 doubles final and a J4 doubles final once.

"Miray brings with her a wealth of national and international success," Beaver said. "Miray frequently plays ITF tournaments and recently won against a WTA ranked player earning her first ITF point."

"I would like to thank our administration, admissions, and the international office for making the singings of Àngela and Miray possible," Beaver concluded.
