Kiawah Island, S.C. – Western Carolina climbed five spots in the team standings in Monday's second round at the 2021 Kiawah Island Classic, advancing into 18th-place overall where it will compete in Tuesday's championship flight over the final 18 holes. WCU was six strokes better in the middle round, carding a team 303 to sit 18th with a two-day total of 612.
Paired with golfers from Delaware and Southern Conference foe Samford, Western Carolina's scoring five opens the final round at 8 a.m. on Tuesday on the front nine of the Cougar Point course.
Sophomore
Victoria Ladd carded a team-best round of 2-over par 74 on Monday to advance 31 spots in the standings, in the clubhouse in a tie for 46th with a 36-hole score of 152. The Greensboro, N.C., native countered five bogeys with a trio of birdies and 10 pars, moving to 2-under par through 10 holes before finishing with four bogeys over her final eight holes.
Seniors
Maya White and
Cameron Wood both posted second-round scores of 4-over par, 76, to count on Monday with
Madison Isaacson a stroke in arrears with a 5-over par 77. White slipped into a tie for 40th overall to lead WCU for the event, recovering from a 3-over par start with three birdies over her final four holes on the front nine. However, four bogeys on the back nine relegated her to 4-over, 76. Wood climbed 34 spots in the individual standings by trimming eight strokes off her opening-round score currently in a tie for 145th overall. The Waxhaw, N.C., native had a quiet second round, countering a double-bogey and three bogeys with a birdie.
Isaacson is tied for 89th overall at 155, shooting 77 on Monday to advance four positions. After carding 15 pars and two bogeys, the junior was poised to finish at 2-over for the round. However, a triple-bogey on the par-4 18th left her at 5-over for the day.
Rounding out WCU's scoring five is senior
Hazel Martin, who improved by two strokes with a second-round score of 78 for a two-day total of 158 to jump 21 spots in the individual standings. Martin had 11 pars and a birdie on Monday.
Dallas Baptist posted a second-round team score of 277 to move to the team lead with a two-round score of 569, 18 strokes ahead of second-place Northern Illinois (587). First-round leader ETSU (590) slipped to third overall with Murray State and Stetson tied for fourth with matching scores of 591.
Murray State's Raeysha Surendran overtook first-round leader Faith DeLaGarza of DBU with a second-round 68 for a two-day total of 137, three strokes ahead of DeLaGarza (140) atop the individual leaderboard.
