Both teams enter Saturday's conference match-up looking to end six-game seasonal droughts and combined eight-game slides as two of the four teams in the SoCon that competed in the fall portion of the 2020-21 schedule. WCU fell last week in its home-opener to the resurgent VMI Keydets and SoCon preseason Offensive Player of the Year Reece Udinski, 30-7. The Citadel, which was picked fourth in the SoCon preseason, suffered its third-straight one-point loss at the hands of the Chattanooga Mocs, rallying from a 14-point deficit with 10 points in the fourth quarter to extend the game into overtime. UTC went for two following its score in the extra session to pick up the walk-off road win.
WCU senior tailback
Donnavan Spencer just missed the century mark last week against the Keydets, rushing for 98 yards, the bulk of which came after halftime. Freshman RB
Mikai Stanley plunged in from five yards out for his first career rushing score for the WCU offense. Senior LB
Ty Harris posted the 12th double-digit tackle performance of his career with a team-high 14 tackles – his fourth game this season with double-figure stops.
In the most recent WCU-The Citadel meeting, the Catamounts grabbed an early 3-0 lead before the Bulldogs rattled off four consecutive scores to lead 28-3 midway through the second quarter. WCU used consecutive scores at the end of the second quarter and late in the third to close to within 11 points, 28-17, but former Bulldog QB Brandon Rainey hit Remus Bulmer for his second receiving score to provide the final tally, 35-17.
Bulldog QB Jaylan Adams is expected to make his third-straight start in replacing Rainey, who was a third-team All-America selection in 2019 but opted to graduate after the fall semester. Adams, a product of Johnson City, Tenn., who was converted to defensive back before returning to the offensive side of the ball last spring, has rushed and thrown for a touchdown in both of his first two career starts.
The Citadel had six preseason All-SoCon selections headlined by linebacker Willie Eubanks Jr., who was tabbed as the league's preseason defensive player of the year.
