Catamounts Rally to Complete Series Sweep of St. John’s

WCU scored eight-unanswered runs including a pair of big innings

Cullowhee, N.C.Daylan Nanny doubled in a 3-for-5, two RBI outing while Seth Graves and Daniel Walsh combined to plate five runs as Western Carolina completed the three-game nonconference series sweep of St. John's on Sunday afternoon, rallying for an 8-3 win at Childress Field / Hennon Stadium.

WCU (11-4) stretched its current winning streak to six straight, overcoming a 3-0 deficit through the first three-plus innings with eight unanswered runs, including two big innings with a four-run fourth and three runs in the fifth.

Nanny hustled into second base for a run-scoring double to put the Catamounts on the board in the fourth inning as the Plainfield, Ind., product paced three with multi-hit games. Justice Bigbie doubled in a 2-for-4, two-run performance while Luke Robinson reached three times in a 2-for-4 showing while also drawing a walk in likewise scoring two runs.

Graves, who finished 1-for-2 with a pair of walks and a team-best three RBI, handed the Catamounts a lead they would never relinquish with a two-run single into center field in the bottom of the fourth inning as the Catamounts scored four in the frame. Walsh helped extend the lead with a two-RBI single in the fifth inning, finishing 1-for-4 with a walk.

Graves collected his third RBI on a bases-loaded fifth inning walk before Nanny capped the scoring, plating Robinson on a single in the sixth inning.

Redshirt junior Ryan Mitschele (2-1) earned the victory after limiting the Red Storm to three runs – only two of which were earned – on six hits over 5.0 innings in the start. The Statesville, N.C., native struck out three with just one freebie on an HBP. Relievers Davis Tyndall and Zach Franklin both tossed 2.0 innings out of the bullpen with Tyndall striking out one in facing the minimum while Franklin fanned two with a pair of hits allowed.

St. John's (7-3) had two players finish with three-hit games as Nick Cirelli (3-for-4) tallied a trio of singles and Vinny Bianchi doubled in also finishing 3-for-4 with an RBI. Red Storm starter Brian Hendry (1-1) took the loss, surrendering seven earned runs over 4.0 innings, countering two walks, and a hit batter with three strikeouts.

Western Carolina stays out of conference in the midweek for the return trip to Kennesaw, Ga., to face Kennesaw State on Wednesday evening at Stillwell Stadium. WCU outlasted the Owls, 12-11, last Wednesday in Cullowhee. The Catamounts then open Southern Conference play on the weekend against the Mercer Bears in Macon, Ga.
