Wallace, N.C. – Sophomore
Magnus Pedersen carded his season-low, 3-under par round of 69 on Tuesday, rallying 19 spots in the final standings to pace Western Carolina with a career-best, eighth-place showing to lead the Catamounts to seventh overall at the 2021 Seahawk Intercollegiate at the par-72, 7,017-yard River Landing Golf Club.
Pedersen, who finished the three-round event with a score of 214, improved upon his previous career-best finish of 11th turned in earlier this season at the J.T. Poston Invitational at Cateechee by three spots. The Moss, Norway, native was tied for 27th at 1-over par after Monday's first and second rounds. On Tuesday, Pedersen carded six birdies to counter a trio of bogeys for the 3-under par round, finishing the event with 12 birdies.
Sophomore
Pierre Viallaneix tallied a Top 20 finish in a tie for 15th overall, carding a 54-hole score of 1-over par 217. After shooting 1-under par 71 in the first round, the Apopka, Fla., product finished with consecutive rounds of 1-over 73 that included three birdies against four bogeys in the final round. Viallaneix carded 10 birdies over the two-day event.
Junior
Louis Theys finished tied for 28th overall (220), sliding seven spots over the final round with a 5-over 76 on Tuesday, while freshman
Presten Richardson matching his final round score to finish tied for 47th (230). Rounding out WCU's scoring side were junior Tumi Kúld in a tie for 54th at 235 with sophomore
Quinton Metz tied for 59th overall at 242.
Collectively, WCU finished third as a team in par-5 scoring while Pedersen was fifth in scoring on the par-4 holes.
Ranked 48th in the country, tournament-host UNC Wilmington cruised to the team championship by 21 strokes over second-place Wright State, 838-to-859. UNCW put four individuals inside the tournament's top 10. James Madison shot 870 to finish third followed by a two-way tie for fourth between Lipscomb and Radford at 871 to round out the top five.
USC Upstate's Hunter Fry claimed individual medalist honors with a 9-under par 207, two strokes ahead of Drew Hackett of UNCW at 209.
Western Carolina returns to action March 26-28 in the three-round, three-day Furman Intercollegiate at the Furman University Golf Course.
