Huneycutt hits fifth home run of the season

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Sophomore hurler Jayme Eilers tossed a two-hit shutout and Bailey Huneycutt blasted a solo home run to help lead Western Carolina softball to a 2-0 win in game two against Chattanooga after dropping game one 8-0 in five innings at Frost Stadium.

Turning Point 
Chattanooga held Western Carolina scoreless and scored eight runs throughout five innings, including a bombastic six-run inning in the third. 
 
How it Happened 
  • Western Carolina had a strong opening to the game as Morgan Maddaluna led off the first inning with a single but she was erased at third trying to leg out a sacrifice bunt by Lindsay Perillo. Bailey Huneycutt walked for the Catamounts second baserunner of the inning but was stranded. 
  • Chattanooga took an early 1-0 lead scoring a run in the bottom of the first. 
  • In a scoreless second inning, the Mocs exploded for six runs in the bottom of the third. The inning was highlighted by Liz Rodebaugh's three-run home run.
  • The Mocs cut the game short, to five innings, scoring the game-ending run in the bottom of the fifth. 
 
  Inside the Box Score 
  • Sophomore pitcher Savannah Rice got the start and took the loss. She falls to 2-8 on the year after going 2.1 innings giving up five runs on three hits and walked four. 
  • Fellow sophomore pitcher Jayme Eilers replaced Rice in the third inning finishing out the game allowing three runs on five hits and struck out three. 
  • Chattanooga had eight hits in the game while WCU had two – a single by Maddaluna and a double by Perillo.

Turning Point 
Eilers and the Catamount defense held the Mocs scoreless and Huneycutt broke open a scoreless tie with a solo home run in the top of the fourth. 
 
How it Happened 
  • After three scoreless innings, Huneycutt led off the fourth inning with a solo home run. 
  • The Catamounts added an insurance run in the top of the sixth was in the mix again drawing a two-out walk. Kailey McNeil reached first after being hit by a pitch pushing Huneycutt to second. Myra Twitty followed with an RBI single up the middle scoring Huneycutt. 
  • Chattanooga attempted a rally in the bottom of the seventh and even had the go-ahead run at the plate with two outs. A Catamount error put the lead Moc on base and after a fielder's choice, a walk, and a wild pitch, Chattanooga had runners at the corners. Eilers calmly struck out Gracey Kruse to end the threat and the game. 
 
 
 Inside the Box Score 
  • Chattanooga was held to two hits in the game and was sat down in order in three of the seven innings and left a total of six runners on base. 
  • Eilers tossed a complete game earning the shutout. She gave up two hits, struck out five, and improved to 4-8 on the year. 
  • Huneycutt led the team with a home run and two runs scored. 
 
 News & Notes 
  • Huneycutt hit her fifth home run of the season in the second game of the doubleheader with the Mocs. She paces the team with 20 hits and also tops the team with 15 runs scored. She has hit a home run in two of the last four games.  
  • Eilers notched her second shutout of the season and has fanned a team-leading 65 batters. She has 88 strikeouts in her career which ranks 13th in the WCU record books. She needs 13 strikeouts to move into the 12th. 
  • With the 2-0 win over Chattanooga, in game two of the doubleheader, the Catamounts halted a nine-game losing streak to the Mocs. The win at Chattanooga marks the fifth win at Chattanooga in the two team's history. 
  • The Mocs have now been shut out eight times on the year.
  • The Catamounts are 3-2 over the last five games. 
 
Up Next 
Western Carolina begins a 10-game homestand Tuesday hosting Radford in a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. at the Catamount Softball Complex.
