Natalia Icen out in style with a 3-1 victory over Wofford on Senior Night at the Catamount Soccer Complex.
Turning Point:
Western Carolina scored two first-half goals and an insurance goal in the second half.
Individual Leaders
- Sophomore Rea Syska had two assists in the match.
- Freshman Maggie Lloyd scored a goal and an assist.
- Summit Dann scored the first Catamount goal.
- Rachel Raisins scored Wofford's lone goal in the match.
How it Happened
- At the 10:08 mark, Lloyd took a through ball and passed it to the streaking Dann down the right side who out-paced two Terrier defenders and scored past a diving goalkeeper Maria Mon.
- Late in the first half, Western Carolina struck again at the 35:45 mark. Syska's cross from the left side bounced in front of the goal and in front of the awaiting Bella Pighini who set it in for the second Catamount goal of the match.
- Wofford pulled within one goal when Raisin took a pass from Eva Dailey at the 61:17 mark to open the second half.
- In the waning minutes of the second half, WCU added an insurance goal at 84:26. Syska took the ball on the Wofford's attacking side of the field, made a Terrier miss at mid-field, and went down the field and passed to Lloyd who had beat two Wofford defenders. Lloyd moved to the right just past the Terrier goalkeeper.
Inside the Box Score
- Icen got her second start of the season and earned her first victory in the year. She had four saves in the match and improves to 1-1 on the year.
- Western Carolina had 16 shots in the match, eight in each half, while Wofford had 11.
- Senior Regan Ward had four shots in the match which included two shots in quick succession as her first shot bounced off the crossbar, back to her, and then her shot went wide.
News & Notes
- Icen was honored before the match as she will be the only Catamount senior who will not be returning courtesy of her COVID-19 year. She plans to graduate from Western Carolina in the spring and attend veterinary school.
- Syska leads the team with three assists earning three of the six in the last two matches. Her six goals are tied for 10th in the WCU record books for the most assists in a season.
- Lloyd scored her third goal of the season and moves into a tie with Ward for the most goals in the season.
- Western Carolina has now won the last six meetings against Wofford.
- In three of the four Catamounts wins the Catamounts have scored three goals in the victory. The lone match WCU didn't score three goals in the win was a 1-0 overtime victory against Charlotte.
