The Basics

Location: Betts Stadium, Macon, Ga.

MACON, Ga. – Western Carolina women's soccer dropped a 3-1 decision at Mercer Thursday at Betts Stadium.

The loss ends the Catamounts' chances of making the four-team Southern Conference Championships as the No. 4 seed is mathematically out of their reach. Only the top four seeds earn a bid to the 2021 championship in this unique spring season.

Turning Point:
Mercer scored two goals in the first seven minutes of the match and tacked on a third in the opening minutes of the second half.

How it Happened
  • At 5:39 Mercer scored on a penalty kick after a foul was called inside the box. Pace Stephenson scored the goal hitting it into the bottom center past Catamount goalie Melody Mezzina
  • Less than two minutes later, the Bears scored their second goal of the match.
  • Almost three minutes into the second half, 47:45 the Bears scored their third goal of the match.
  • Western Carolina avoided the shutout scoring a goal at the 83rd minute. Freshman Katelyn Galbraith passed the ball down the field, intending to pass it to Regan Ward who skimmed the ball and passed it to Aliyah Milicia as it landed in front of her about 15 yards out. Milicia shot the ball into the left side of the goal, just a hair's breadth from the post, and scored.

Individual Leaders:
  • Milicia scored her first goal as a Catamount.
  • Ward earned her second assist of the season.
  • Maryanne Kilgore and Milicia combined for five shots on goal as Milicia had three, scoring one goal, and Kilgore had four.

 Inside the Box Score
  • Mezzina got the start in the match, but after two first-half goals by the Bears, she was lifted and replaced by senior Natalia Icen. Mezzina gave up two goals and had one save.
  • Icen closed out the match playing the final 81:25 of the contest. She allowed one goal and had four saves.
  • Western Carolina had 16 shots in the match, five in the first half and 11 in the second.
