Julia Gardon both finished with a double-double as Western Carolina pushed its winning streak to six with a 3-0 win at UNCG on Monday at Fleming Gymnasium. The Catamounts won by scores of 25-19, 25-21, and 25-20 for their sixth-consecutive straight sets victory.
WCU concludes the regular season at 11-7 overall and 11-5 in league matches for the second straight year. The Catamounts will be the No. 3 seed in the SoCon Championships beginning Friday against the second seed. UNCG finished the season 2-15 overall and 2-14 in league matches.
Gardon turned in her second career double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs. Gebel tallied 10 kills and 16 digs for her team-best 11
th double-double of the year. Freshman
Destinee Dorsey had a team-best 25 digs while senior
Hannah Price handed out a match-high 35 assists. Freshman
Eden Punch swatted a career-best six total blocks.
Maria Esch led UNCG with 16 kills and 18 digs. Mandy Garvens also tallied 18 digs while Haven McPeek had 32 assists.
Trailing 16-14 in the opening set, WCU used a 7-0 run capped by a Gardon kill to take a 21-16 lead. The Spartans got no closer than four points for the remainder of the set as a Price kill gave WCU set point.
After an Esch kill tied the second set at 10, the Catamounts took five of the next six points for a 15-11 lead at the media timeout. WCU stretched its lead to a set-best seven points, 21-14, following a Robinson kill before the Spartans pulled within one, 22-21, thanks to a Hannah Knier kill. The UNCG run was halted by a serving error and WCU closed out the set with a
Sydney Carlson service ace and a Gebel kill.
Tied at 11 in the third set, the Catamounts went on a 5-0 run for a 16-11 lead. A kill by Punch put the visitors ahead 17-12 but UNCG battled back within two, 18-16, after a Catamount error. WCU answered with four of the next five points for a 22-17 lead. The match ended on a UNCG attack error.
The Catamounts will face Mercer in the second of two semifinals at 7:30 p.m. Eastern on Friday on the home court of regular season champion Samford. The championship match is set for Saturday at 5 p.m. Eastern.
