Volleyball Heads to Furman for Weekend Series

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – After sweeping ETSU last time out, Western Carolina volleyball hits the road this weekend for a two-game set at Furman inside Alley Gymnasium. The Catamounts face the Paladins on Sunday at 5 p.m. and Monday at 6 p.m.
 
Monday's match will be streamed on ESPN+ (paid subscription required) with free live stats available for both matches via a link on catamountsports.com.
 
Western Carolina is 5-6 overall and 5-4 in league matches after a 3-0 win Sunday and a 3-1 victory Monday against the Buccaneers. The Catamounts swept the season series against the Bucs for the first time since 2002.
 
Junior Merry Gebel earned SoCon Offensive Player of the Week honors after she tallied 55 total kills and averaged 4.58 kills per set in three matches last week. Additionally, she posted double-doubles in all three matches, recording 47 digs defensively on the week. Gebel currently is second in the SoCon with 162 kills and third in kills per set at 3.95.
 
Senior Hannah Price took home Setter of the Week laurels recorded 136 assists for an average of 11.33 assists per set in three matches played. The Piney Flats, Tenn., native dished out a career-high 54 assists in a 3-1 win over ETSU on Monday after recording 44 assists against Wofford and 38 in Sunday's match against ETSU. Like Gebel, Price also had double-doubles in each match last week with 15 digs on Wednesday and Sunday and a season-high 19 on Monday.
 
Furman is 3-5 overall and in SoCon matches after being swept at home last weekend by UNCG. The Spartans won Sunday's match 3-2 for their first victory of the season, and closed out the series with a 3-1 win on Monday. The Paladins are 0-4 at home and 3-1 on the road having lost their last three matches.
 
The teams have met 79 times with Furman leading the all-time series 45-34. The Catamounts swept the regular season series in 2019, edging the Paladins 3-2 in Greenville on Sept. 28 followed by a 3-0 home win on Oct. 26.
 
WCU is back at home on March 14-15 for Senior Weekend against Mercer.
