CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina women's soccer suffered a 2-0 setback in the Southern Conference match against UNCG Sunday at the Catamount Athletic Complex. 
 
Turning Point:
UNCG scored a goal with five seconds left in the first half and added an insurance goal in the second half. 
 
 Individual Leaders
  • UNCG's Ashley Avelino scored the first goal of the game. 
  • Western Carolina's Maggie Lloyd had three shots in the match. 
 
 Inside the Box Score
  • With five seconds left in the first quarter, UNCG scored a controversial goal as Ashley Avelino took a shot from a corner kick. The ball came to Avelino on a corner kick by Eliza Radoll who passed it to Rachel Rouse sending it to Avelino. The ball looked like it was deflected by Catamount goalkeeper Melody Mezzina to the top of the crossbar and out but the referee called the ball in and awarded the Spartans the goal. 
  • In the 59th minute, UNCG's Caroline Woods added the Spartans insurance goal.
  • Western Carolina had a beauty of a scoring chance in the 14th minute when Summit Dann found herself in front of the goal but, her shot went high. 
  • UNCG had a total of 14 shots in the game and Western Carolina had seven. The Catamounts had three of its shots in the second half but didn't get a shot off in the final 45 minutes until near the middle of the half. 
  • Mezzina takes the loss and falls to 2-3 on the season. 
 
 
News & Notes 
  • Mezzina has 24 saves on the season and 57 in her career ranking ninth in the WCU record books. 
  • Western Carolina has been shut out three times this season. 
  • The Catamounts are now 3-23-3 all-time against UNCG.
