Catamounts Sweep Paladins on Monday

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Western Carolina earned a season split against Furman thanks to a 3-0 sweep of the Paladins on Monday evening at Alley Gymnasium. The Catamounts won the match by scores of 25-14, 25-18, and 25-22.

WCU improves to 6-7 overall and 6-5 in the Southern Conference while Furman drops to 4-6 on the season and in league contests.

Sophomore Johnna Robinson swatted away a career-high nine total blocks with a career-best eight block assists. Junior Merry Gebel led the Catamounts with 11 kills while freshman Destinee Dorsey had a match-best 22 digs. Senior Hannah Price had a match-best 30 assists.

Neci Harris led Furman with 12 kills while Andrea Aceveda tallied 20 digs. Katie Murphy tallied 29 assists.

A Multerer kill gave the Catamounts an 8-4 lead in the first set before a Maya Mrus kill tied the stanza at 10. The Catamounts scored 11 of the next 12 points for a 21-11 lead as a Gebel ace concluded the set and gave WCU a 1-0 lead in the match. WCU hit a match-best .522 in the opening set.

Tied at 18 in the second set, WCU used a 7-0 run to close out the set and take a 2-0 lead in the match. Of the seven straight points for the Catamounts, two came as a result of Robinson kills with three more being scored on blocks.

WCU opened the third set on a 9-2 run before the Paladins trimmed their deficit to two, 14-12 after a Harris kill. The Catamounts extended their advantage to 24-16 following a Paladin error but Furman didn't go quietly as the hosts trimmed the WCU lead to two, 24-22, as a Harris kill capped a 6-0 run. Price wrapped up the match with a kill as WCU earned its fourth 3-0 win of the year.

The Catamounts are back at home next weekend, hosting Mercer on Sunday at 3 p.m. and on Monday at 5 p.m. WCU will honor Madison McNally, Caroline Perret, Hannah Price, and MaKenzie White in a ceremony prior to Sunday's contest.
