CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina softball swept its second consecutive Southern Conference series with 8-0 (6 innings), 6-1, 5-3 wins over visiting ETSU. The Catamounts won their 11th-straight game snapping the school record of 10 consecutive wins set in 2006.

Western Carolina 8, ETSU 0 (six innings)
The game began game one on Saturday and was halted in the top of the fourth with the Catamounts leading 7-0 and ETSU runners on second and third and no outs due to heavy rain in the area.

Turning Point
Western Carolina scored five runs in the second and two in the third and cut the game short with the eighth run in the bottom of the sixth.

How it Happened
  • Western Carolina exploded for five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Junior Myra Twitty got things started with a monster home run to left-center field. Freshman Jeralynn Wells reached first when her shot to right field bounced off the fielder's glove, for an ETSU error, allowing her to reach third. Savannah Baldwin hit into a fielder's choice as the Buccaneer second baseman attempted to get wells out at home but she made it home safe.
  • With the Catamounts leading 2-0 in the second, and Baldwin on second, Anna-Paige Pelfrey singled to right center moving Baldwin to third. With one out, Pelfrey stole second and Morgan Maddaluna walked to load the bases. Bailey Huneycutt hit an RBI single through the right-side scoring Baldwin. Pelfrey and Maddaluna came home on a two-RBI single by Kailey McNeil.
  • The Catamounts tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the third. Wells hit a lead-off single to open the inning. The Buccaneers lifted starting pitcher Kelly Schmidt for reliever Taylor Boling. Baldwin quickly welcomed Boling with a single past the shortstop. A sacrifice bunt by Pelfrey moved Wells to third and Baldwin to second and Wells scored on a wild pitch. Riley Lambert hit an RBI single plating Baldwin.
  • ETSU had its best scoring chance in the fourth when the game was halted on Saturday due to rain. When the game picked up in the fourth on Sunday Catamount pitcher Savannah Rice got a pair of strikeouts and a ground out to end the Buccaneers' scoring chance.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, with one out, Huneycutt hit a solo home run to end the game.
