Tennis Shuts Out Young Harris on Senior Day

Catamounts honor seniors before the match

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina women's tennis sent seniors Anna Uljanov, Carli Deehr, and Jordyn King out in style with a 7-0 sweep of Young Harris Sunday at the Catamount Tennis Complex. 
 
Uljanov, Deehr, and King were honored before the match and the Catamounts' senior day. Former Catamounts Jordan Strickland and Lauren McCall returned to campus and were also honored as they missed their 2020 senior day due to the season being canceled last season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  
 
TURNING POINT:
Western Carolina took two out of three doubles matches for the doubles point and swept the singles matches for the win. 
 
 INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Head Coach Bret Beaver shook things up in singles and doubles play against Young Harris. Jacy Smith did not play doubles instead Hoda Habib and Deehr were paired at No. 2 doubles and Antonella Benavides and Emily Elliott were at No. 3 doubles. Western Carolina got wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles for the doubles point. 
  • Smith moved up to No. 1 singles for the match and won 6-0, 6-1 as regular No. 1 single's player Kata Foldeak did not play singles. 
  • Uljanov played No. 2 singles and easily breezed by 6-1, 6-3. 
  • Deehr also played singles, at No. 6, winning 6-4, 6-3.
  • Habib had to go to a tiebreaker as she won the first set 6-2, lost the second 4-6, and took the tiebreaker 10-1 at No. 3 singles. 
 
NOTES:
  • Western Carolina is now 7-2 at home this season. 
  • Smith now has 25 career victories in singles ranking ninth in the WCU record books. 
  • Two of Western Carolina's final three matches of the season are on the road.

Western Carolina hosts Samford at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Catamounts' final home match of the season.
