Catamounts Fall to Mercer but take the SoCon Series

MACON, Ga. – Western Carolina softball dropped the final game of the three-game series at Mercer 6-0 Sunday at Sikes Field.

Turning Point 
The Bears took the early lead with a home run in the second and went on to score in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. 
 
How it Happened 
  • Mercer took its first lead of the series with a second-inning lead-off home run. 
  • The Bears got runners on first and second to begin the fourth and scored on a Catamount error. 
  • Mercer plated three runs in the fifth and one in the sixth. 
  • The Catamounts had runners in scoring position three times, including a runner at third in the fourth, and bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, but just couldn't push a run across.
 
 Inside the Box Score 
  • Sophomore pitcher Jayme Eilers takes the loss falling to 8-9 on the season. She tossed 4.2 innings giving up five runs, four earned, on four hits, and struck out five. 
  • Savannah Rice replaced Eilers with two outs in the fifth. She completed the game giving up a run and three hits. 
  • The Catamounts had five hits in the contest while Mercer had seven. 
  • Bailey Huneycutt drew three walks in the game. 
 
News & Notes 
  • Huneycutt extends her on-base streak to 20 consecutive games. She is chasing the program record of 30 set by former Catamount Nikki Bost in 2007.
  •  Kailey McNeil pushed her on base-streak to 13. 
  • Western Carolina snapped its streak of nine-straight conference wins. 
  • Western Carolina's nine conference wins this season are the most since the 2016 club ended the season with nine. 
  • The Catamounts have won their last three conference series. 
  • Eilers has 91 strikeouts on the season, ranking second in the conference. For her career, she has 119, which ranks 11th in the WCU record books.
