Catamounts Drop Pair of Games at USC Upstate

Bailey Huneycutt has reached base safely in the last 22 games

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Western Carolina softball dropped a pair of games at USC Upstate 3-1, 7-0 Tuesday at Cyrill Stadium.

Turning Point 
Tied 1-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth, USC Upstate scored two runs to break the tie and capture the win. 
 
How it Happened 
  • USC Upstate broke up a scoreless game with a run in the bottom of the fourth off a groundout RBI. 
  • The Catamounts made things interesting when WCU tied the game in the top of the sixth. Senior Kailey McNeil drew a lead-off walk and motored to second thanks to a single to the left side by Myra Twitty. Bailey Treadway came in to pinch run for Twitty and she and McNeil pulled off a double steal. With McNeil on third, Jeralynn Wells hit an RBI single up the middle scoring McNeil. 
  • The Spartans retook the lead with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. 
 
 
 
 Inside the Box Score 
  • Sophomore pitcher Jayme Eilers tossed a complete game giving up three runs on seven hits and struck out four. 
  • The Catamounts also had seven hits in the game,
  • Western Carolina had baserunners in five of the seven innings included bases loaded in the fourth. 
  • Baldwin was 2-for-3 in the game.

Turning Point 
USC Upstate exploded for four runs in the first inning and went on to score three more runs throughout the second and fourth innings holding WCU scoreless. 
 
How it Happened 
  • USC Upstate had a huge first inning scoring four runs. 
  • The Spartans added two more runs in the second and its seventh run of the game in the fourth.
 
 Inside the Box Score 
  • Savannah Rice started the game and went 0.2 innings giving up four runs, two earned, on three hits, and walked two. She falls to 10-9 on the season. 
  • Sophomore Caitlin Griffin replaced Rice with two outs in the first inning. She got the final out and went on to toss the final 5.1 innings. She gave up three runs on seven hits. 
  • Western Carolina had four hits in the game. 
 
News & Notes 
  • With the pair of losses at USC Upstate, the two teams split the home and home series. 
  • Bailey Huneycutt extended her on-base streak to 22 consecutive games. 
  • Kailey McNeil saw her on-base streak snapped at 14 after failing to reach base in game two against USC Upstate. 
  • Huneycutt moved her hit count to 40 moving into a tie for first place with UNCG's Makenna Matthijs for hits this season in the SoCon.
  • Eilers hit 100 strikeouts on the season the 13th Catamount pitcher in program history to hit the century mark in strikeouts for a season. The 100 strikeouts also rank second in the Southern Conference. 
  • Twitty has hit safely in the last five games.
  • The Catamounts have owned the month of April with a 10-5 record and a team batting average of .272. Individually, Huneycutt is tearing up the month with a .425 batting average picking up 17 hits, scoring 11 runs adding four doubles and five home runs along with nine RBI.
  • With the pair of losses against USC Upstate, the Catamounts are suffering through a three-game losing streak. 
 
Up Next 
Western Carolina returns home Wednesday to host Gardner-Webb in a doubleheader set to begin at 4 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
