Home Runs Propel Catamounts Past Runnin' Bulldogs in Sweep

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina softball combined for four home runs in the doubleheader to sweep visiting Gardner-Webb 2-1, 5-3 Wednesday at the Catamount Softball Complex.

Turning Point 
Tied 1-1 Western Carolina junior Bailey Huneycutt hit a solo home run in the fifth inning to give the Catamounts the lead and eventual win. 
 
How it Happened 
  • Senior Kailey McNeil led off the second inning with a solo home run to centerfield. 
  • The Runnin' Bulldogs tied the game on a solo home run of their own when McKenzie Lawrence hit a shot to right-centerfield. 
  • Huneycutt broke the tie with a solo home run in the fifth. 
 
  Inside the Box Score 
  • Sophomore pitcher Jayme Eilers tossed a complete game allowing one run on four hits and struck out nine. She moves to 9-10 on the year. 
  • Both teams had four hits in the contest. 
  • A combined three home runs were hit in the game between the two teams.
  • Western Carolina had a base runner in five of six innings.

Turning Point 
Trailing 2-1, Western Carolina scored four unanswered runs to take the lead and the game. 
 
How it Happened 
  • Gardner-Webb scored two runs in the first inning courtesy of back-to-back errors by the Catamounts.
  • Western Carolina cut the Gardner-Webb lead in half with a run in the bottom of the first. Lindsay Perillo drew a one-out walk and Bailey Huneycutt reached on a Runnin' Bulldog error. McNeil came up and hit an RBI single past third base scoring Perillo. 
  • McNeil's solo home run in the fourth inning tied the game, 2-2. 
  • The Catamounts took the lead scoring three runs in the fifth inning. It all began when Anna-Paige Pelfrey singled past second base. Addie Pate came up and hit a two-run home run to left field to give WCU its first lead of the game. The Catamounts tacked on an additional run when Perillo scored, after reaching via a fielder's choice, off of Huneycutt's RBI double. 
  • The Runnin' Bulldogs scored its third run of the game in the sixth on a wild pitch. 
 
 Inside the Box Score 
  • Sophomore Caitlin Griffin got her first start of the season and picked up the win. She went 5.1 innings, did not give up an earned run, and struck out two. She improves to 1-2 on the season.
  • Eilers came into the game in the sixth inning and earned her first save of the season. With bases loaded, she helped navigate an out at home, for the second out of the inning, gave up a run on a wild pitch, and closed out the inning with a strikeout. She ended the game sitting the Runnin' Bulldogs in order including striking out the final batter to end the game. She had two strikeouts. 
  • The Catamounts had eight hits in the game and gave up five to Gardner-Webb.   
  • McNeil and Pelfrey were 2-for-3 in the game. 
  • Pate and McNeil each hit home runs in the game. 
 
News & Notes 
  • Bailey Huneycutt extended her on-base streak to 24 consecutive games. 
  • Western Carolina is now 12-2 at home this season. 
  • The Catamounts won its sixth doubleheader of the season.
  • Huneycutt hit her 11th home run of the season which continues to lead the Southern Conference. She also moves into a tie for sixth place in the WCU record books for most home runs in a season. For her career, she has 19 home runs which move her into a tie for ninth place in the Catamount record books. 
  • Eilers now has 111 strikeouts on the season moving her into 10th place in the WCU record books for most strikeouts in a season. For her career, she has 134 tying her for ninth in the WCU record books for strikeouts in a career. 
  • Myra Twitty had her hitting streak snapped at six in game two against Gardner-Webb. 
  • The Catamounts have owned the month of April with a 12-5 record and a perfect 10-0 at home. The team batting average for the month is .270. Individually, Huneycutt is tearing up the month with a .413 batting average picking up 19 hits, scoring 12 runs adding four doubles and six home runs along with 11 RBI. 
 
Up Next 
Western Carolina has a bye week this weekend in the Southern Conference before returning to the diamond Tuesday, April 27 hosting No. 16 Tennessee in a doubleheader set to begin at 3 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on ESPN+.
