Tennis Defeats Chattanooga in Dramatic Fashion, 4-3

Kata Foldeak's win at No. 1 singles sealed the victory

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Freshman Kata Foldeak won a three-set nail-biter to secure Western Carolina women's tennis' 4-3 win over Chattanooga Friday at the Catamount Tennis Complex. 
 
The victory over the Mocs was the Catamount's first conference win of the season. 
 
TURNING POINT:
Tied at 3-3, it all came down to Foldeak at No. 1 singles. She and her opponent, Jessie Young, had each won a set but Foldeak dominated the third set 6-1 for the crucial win that gave the Catamounts the team victory.
 
 INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Western Carolina jumped out to an early 1-0 lead winning at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. 
  • The Catamounts went up 3-0 with Anna Uljanov's 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles and Antonella Benavides' 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 5 singles. 
  • Three of the next four singles matches went to three sets as the Mocs battled back to win the next three singles matches and tie the contest at 3-3. 
  • Foldeak fought throughout her No. 1 singles match winning the first set 7-6 (7-5) dropping set two 6-7 (2-6) before sailing through set three 6-1. 
 
NOTES:
  • The Catamounts' win over Chattanooga is just the second victory over the Mocs in the two programs' 33 matches. WCU's two victories have both come in Cullowhee and have occurred in two of the last three meetings. 
  • Western Carolina is now 6-2 at home this season. 
  • Jacy Smith's win in doubles gives her 27 in her career as she ranks fifth in the Western Carolina record books. She needs four wins to move into fourth place. 
  • Benavides leads the team with nine singles wins this season and Foldeak is just behind with eight. 
  • Smith and Julia Pezzuco are 4-1 this season as a duo at No. 1 doubles and 2-0 in conference play. 
 
 
UPCOMING:
Western Carolina hosts Young Harris at noon Sunday. Seniors Uljanov, Carli Deehr, and Jordyn King will be honored before the match.
