GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG blasted its way past Western Carolina 9-1 in both games, with game one shortened to six innings and game two to five innings, Saturday at the UNCG Softball Stadium.

The two teams will square off with the Southern Conference regular-season title on the line Sunday. The winner will claim the crown.

UNCG 9, Western Carolina 1

Turning Point
UNCG used a four-run first and a three-run fourth inning to build a lead the Catamounts could not recover from.

How it Happened
  • In the first inning a two-run home run, a run walked in an RBI single put UNCG up 4-0.
  • The Spartans added three runs in the fourth inning.
  • The Catamounts avoided a shutout scratching a run across in the fifth inning. Lindsay Perillo hit a ground-out RBI to eke out the run.
  • UNCG shortened the game to six innings scoring two runs in the sixth inning.

 Inside the Box Score
  • Sophomore hurler Jayme Eilers had a complete game and takes the loss. She falls to 12-11 on the year.
  • UNCG had eight hits and Western Carolina managed only three.
  • Freshman Morgan Maddaluna had two of the Catamounts' three hits.

UNCG 9, Western Carolina 1

Turning Point
In a game of déjà vu, UNCG did the same thing in game two to Western Carolina as it did in game one – using big scoring innings to build a lead the Catamounts could not overcome.

How it Happened
  • After a scoreless first inning, UNCG scored all nine runs in the ensuing next three innings, four in the second, three in the third, and two in the fourth.
  • For the second straight game, WCU avoided the shutout managing to squeeze in one run in the game. In a weird and eerie turn, it was Perillo again hitting a groundout RBI.

 Inside the Box Score
  • Sophomore hurler, Savannah Rice takes the loss. She falls to 11-10 on the season.
  • UNCG had 11 hits and Western Carolina managed only two.
  • Freshman Jeralyn Wells was 2-for-2 in the game.

News & Notes
  • The Catamounts dropped its first SoCon series of the season and was swept for the first time on the year in a conference doubleheader.
  • Western Carolina strung together only five hits in the pair of games against UNCG.
  • UNCG hit a total of four home runs in the doubleheader.
  • Bailey Huneycutt had her streak of reaching base snapped at 30 as she failed to reach base in game two against UNCG. She is tied for first place in the WCU record books with former Catamount Nikki Bost who reached base safely in 30 games in 2007.
  • Western Carolina was run-ruled for just the second and third time in a conference game this season.
  • The 12 SoCon wins this season are the second-most by the Catamounts since the program began in 2006. In the inaugural year, that team had 16 conference victories.
  • Whether Western Carolina wins or losses tomorrow the No. 1 or No. 2 seed in the upcoming SoCon Championship will be the highest seed for the Catamounts since a No. 1 seed in 2006. WCU earned a No. 3 seed in the 2016 championship.
