Catamounts Playing in the Summer Baseball Leagues

WCU has 19 players opening the summer around the country

Cullowhee, N.C. – A combined 19 Western Carolina baseball players are playing in various summer collegiate leagues across the country.

WCU has players competing in seven different leagues ranging from the prestigious Cape Cod League in the northeast to the traditional Coastal Plain, Valley, and Carolina-Virginia Collegiate Leagues in the southeast.

Coming off a stellar freshman season that saw him named All-Southern Conference, Atlantic All-Region, and Freshman All-America, infielder Pascanel Ferreras is one of two Catamounts on roster for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox in Massachusetts in the Cape Cod League. Ferreras is joined by hard-throwing right-hander Zach Franklin with the Y-D squad after leading WCU with seven wins and two saves a season ago.

Freshman RHP Gavin Mortenson is playing for the High Point-Thomasville Hi-Toms close to his hometown of Summerfield, while Landrum, S.C., product Jacob Corn is pitching for the Spartanburgers in Spartanburg, S.C.

Five players – including three as teammates for the Waynesboro Generals – are playing in the Valley Baseball League which includes teams throughout the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia, while four Catamounts are teaming for the Fuquay-Varina Twins in the Carolina-Virginia Collegiate League. Pitchers Carson Lowder, Dylan Wheeler, and Alec Woodard are joined by Raleigh-native Nate Stocum on the Twins' roster, while pitcher Nick Hyde and infielder Will Prater, who is coming off a career-best season offensively, are on the Generals' roster with Cole Beverlin expected to join the squad this summer.

Catcher Tom Brosnahan (Woodstock River Bandits) and infielder Zach Ketterman (Strasburg Express) are also playing in the Valley League. Junior Daniel Walsh is playing in the Northwoods League, while catcher Cody Rech and pitcher Davis Mortland are teammates for the Alpharetta (Ga.) Aviators of the Sunbelt Baseball League.

Three Catamounts are venturing to two different leagues as Corey Bright is on roster with the Hays (Kansas) Larks in the Rocky Mountain Collegiate Baseball League with teams largely in Colorado and surrounding area, while pitchers Eric Wallington and Jackson Kirkpatrick are teammates for the Souris Valley Sabre Dogs in Minot, North Dakota, in the Expedition League which is comprised of 12 teams in North and South Dakota, Idaho, Montana, Nebraska and Wyoming.

Additional Catamounts may be placed with various summer league teams throughout in the coming weeks.
