Catamounts Drop Season-Opener to North Florida

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina women's soccer opened the 2021 fall campaign with a 4-1 loss to visiting North Florida Thursday at the Catamount Athletic Complex. 
 
How it Happened
  • North Florida scored a pair of first-half goals to take a 2-0 lead into halftime. 
  • The Osprey went up 3-0 with a goal in the 49th minute to start the second half. 
  • The Catamounts got on the scoreboard with a goal at the 51st minute. 
  • UNF closed out the scoring with a goal at 77:12. 
 
 Individual Leaders:
  • North Florida's Mikayla Bond scored the first two goals of the match for the Osprey.
  • Kate Carter and Thais Reiss also scored goals for UNF. 
  • Catamount Maryanne Kilgore scored the lone goal for the Catamounts and the first of the season for the team. 
 
 Inside the Box Score
  • UNF scored its first-half goals in the first 30 minutes of the contest. 
  • North Florida went up 3-0 with a goal at the 49th minute. 
  • Maggie Lloyd's centering pass to Kilgore from the through ball to the outside skirted past reigning ASUN Goalkeeper of the Year Mercedes Sapp for the Catamount goal. 
  • UNF tacked on a fourth goal at the 77th minute of the match. 
  • There were a combined 23 shots in the match with 17 by UNF and 16 by the Catamounts. 
  • Valentine Pursey had three shots in the match including two that just went wide left of the goal in the second half. 
  • Sapp played 83 plus minutes in goal for UNF before being lifted for Sarah Barrentine who played the final six-plus minutes of the match. 
 
News & Notes:
  • For the second straight season, Kilgore scored the first goal in the season-opening match for the Catamounts. She also scored the first goal of the year in WCU's 2021 spring campaign with a golden goal in the team's 1-0 overtime win over Charlotte. 
  • The goal was Kilgore's third in her career. 
  • Lloyd's assist was her first of the season and third of her career. 
  • With the win, UNF has now won seven consecutive matches dating back to the spring 2021 season. 
 
UPCOMING:
  • Western Carolina returns to action Sunday hosting mountain rival UNC Asheville at 7 p.m. The match will be broadcast on ESPN+.
