CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina volleyball concludes its nonconference schedule this weekend as the Catamounts travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala. for the Bama Bash Invitational hosted by Alabama.
The Catamounts open the tournament on Friday against Houston at 11 a.m. ET/10 a.m. CT and face Tennessee Tech at 3 p.m. ET/2 p.m. CT in their second match of the day. WCU concludes the tournament against the host Crimson Tide on Saturday at 11 a.m. ET/10 a.m. CT. WCU's matches against both Houston and Alabama represent the first meetings in program history. Friday afternoon's meeting with Tennessee Tech is the 13th all-time with the Catamounts trailing 4-8 overall, dropping the last meeting 3-1 in Cullowhee in August 2016. Houston, a member of the American Athletic Conference (AAC), enters the tournament with an 8-1 record, sporting wins over Power 5 members Oregon State, Oklahoma, and Mississippi State with its lone loss to Texas A&M. Ohio Valley Conference member Tennessee Tech is 5-3 including a win over SoCon foe Chattanooga, while Alabama enters the weekend with a 5-4 seasonal record.
Sophomore
Destinee Dorsey, the reigning Southern Conference Libero of the Year, was named the league's Defensive Player of the Week on Monday afternoon. The Mobile, Ala. native recorded 58 total digs in three matches at the Colonel Challenge including a match-best 28 in a 3-2 win over Western Illinois. Dorsey currently leads the SoCon with 5.13 digs per set.

SoCon play opens next weekend as the Catamounts venture to ETSU on Friday for a 7 p.m. match and Chattanooga on Saturday for a 6 p.m. contest. WCU's first home matches of the season are scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Oct. 1-2 against Mercer and Samford, the top two seeds from the spring season.
